Bellevue High Assessments:

The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires that students be assessed each year in reading and math, grades 3 through 8, plus once in high school. In Washington State, students in grades 3-8 now take the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) tests in May; and high school students take the High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) in March and April.

State tests are intended to assess whether students have sufficiently mastered a set of grade-level standards for a particular subject. In other words, “How many students have learned what they need to know – and can demonstrate that learning?” Scores for the MSP or HSPE are reported in 4 levels: “Exceeds Standard,” “Meets Standard,” “Below Standard,” and “Well Below Standard.”

Two other measures of high school performance are SAT scores and numbers of students taking Advanced Placement (AP) exams.

Enrollment in AP* courses and student success on AP exams have become leading indicators of academic rigor in our high schools. Changes in AP exam-taking over the last few years have been impressive. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP exams may qualify to receive college credits.


Of the nation's 21,000 high schools, about 11,500 offer at least one Advanced Placement course. The average participating high school offers six A.P. courses and administers 77 examinations.

Advanced Academic Options - Advanced Placement classes in Science, Math, Social Studies, English, World Language, Art and Music Theory; College in the High school in English, Science & Math, French, Spanish; Running Start and Tech. Prep. Athletics - Bellevue's 20 varsity teams and 45 other teams provide a full range of team and individual sports. Activities - After school activities include ASB, debate, drama, DECA, Junior Statesmen, National Honor Society, Earth Save, and club sports. Music - Music groups include Bellairs, Beginning Intermediate and Advanced Choir, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band I and II, Orchestra, and Prep Band. Linkcrew - National program in which juniors and seniors sponsor a small group of freshmen as the transition into high school.
