Nikesh Srivastava works for Microsoft as a Program Manager on the Data & Analytics team. He joined the VIBES Mentor Tutor Program in January of 2015 to help secondary students in math. Srivastava chose VIBES because he wanted to be the mentor that he wished he had when he was in school.
Srivastava works in Andria Quarry’s 8th grade Algebra I classroom, first period every day. He originally thought he might volunteer one or two mornings a week, but after the first day with the kids, he decided to attend class every morning.
Srivastava wants young students to get excited about math. He chose to take an active role to demonstrate that STEM is a viable option that isn’t as hard as people make it out to be. Ms. Quarry says “Nikesh is a phenomenal addition to my classroom – easy going, approachable and knowledgeable. Students respect and value his support. Reducing the student to adult ratio with mentors is a huge benefit for student learning.”
When asked why he thought others should consider tutoring, Srivastava said “…it’s a great way to give back to your community. There are many people in this area who are highly educated and have a lot of transferable knowledge. If we share this with our youth, we can greatly impact their lives as well as start to build a pipeline to help combat the technology shortage that large companies are facing today.” And, “they get to go back to school and do fun math every morning!”
