Highlights

Curriculum developers Paris Granville and Monica Lo presented a written report on world language curriculum in the district. The report highlights student progress and ways the curriculum addresses racial equity through culturally responsive teaching, and inclusion through home language competency credits and more accessible classes.

Jing Mei Elementary Principal Tina Bogucharova presented a school report which included an overview of the choice school’s Mandarin-English instructional model, current enrollment demographics, student progress, and school goals, challenges and needs.

Director of Research, Evaluation & Assessment Naomi Calvo presented a School Achievement Report for fall 2017. The report outlines school proficiency levels on state standards, a look at disaggregated school proficiency levels, trends in school performance over time, college and career readiness indicators, and AP exam participation and pass rate trends.

Calvo also presented a School Improvement Planning (SIP) Overview following the achievement report. SIPs are designed to organize, report on, and monitor continuous improvement. SIPs for each school can be found on BoardDocs under the Dec. 12 meeting.

Board directors Christine Chew and My-Linh Thai presented a brief culture of service update on the work of their small group tasked with finding ways to foster a service-oriented mindset across the district. A group of trainers will meet with office managers and principals to launch the effort and training will begin in early 2018.

In accordance with state law, the board was asked to approve the pro and con committees who have stepped forward to provide statements for the three Feb. 13 levy ballot measures.

The board conducted a second reading of Policy 3122 Excused and Unexcused Absences. The board approved the revisions for Policy 3122.

The board conducted a second reading for the rescission of current Policy 6250: Communication Devices. The board approved the change.

The board reviewed the status of filling the upcoming board director vacancy. Board Director Christine Chew motioned that the board update the application timeline online to more accurately reflect the process. The board approved the motion.

Executive Director of Schools Cindy Rogan presented an update to the board on improving the school culture and climate at Ardmore Elementary.

The board hosted a recognition reception for departing Director Steve McConnell in appreciation for his more than six years of service.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
