Congratulations to the 64 Bellevue School District educators who recently became National Board Certified Teachers and the 36 Bellevue teachers who achieved National Board renewal in 2017! Bellevue School District now employs over 400 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs).  According to the National Board, Bellevue currently ranks 19th out of all public school districts nationwide in terms of the number of NBCTs on staff.

Certification is a one- to five-year process that includes teachers meeting after school and on weekends to discuss their teaching, curriculum, and assessment tools and to evaluate video tapes of one another teaching. They also take an assessment on their content area and assemble three portfolios.  National Board certification is the highest credential available to educators in which they demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the education of students, as well as to their own professional development.

“Congratulations to all the newly-certified teachers and those who renewed their certificates,” said Chris Reykdal, Superintendent of Public Instruction. “It takes a lot of sustained and intentional work to become a National Board Certified teacher, and it’s a testament to the dedication of our teachers that so many continue to pursue it.”

BSD teachers are supported in their pursuit of National Board certification by the district and the generosity of Bellevue Schools Foundation donors. The district’s financial contribution of $550 per teacher toward candidacy fees helps ease the financial burden placed on staff.  This year the Bellevue Schools Foundation contributed $30,000 to fund content-area facilitators and a videographer.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
