Resolution No. 2018-24

Sep. 25, 2018

Bellevue School District Board of Directors Resolution

Affirming the Board’s Commitment to Each and Every Student

As expressed in our updated District mission, the Bellevue School Board values the humanity of each and every student we serve and is committed to equitably serving each and every student as we roll out our new strategic and annual plans. In that spirit, the Board…

  • Recognizes that not all students are on track to graduate, to meet educational requirements, and to learn and thrive in our school community, particularly students of color, English language learners, and students with special needs.
  • Recognizes that not all students feel a sense of belonging day-to-day in our schools, particularly students of color, English language learners, and students with special needs.
  • Recognizes that many of our students face out of school challenges that impact their education, such as poverty, housing, transportation, health care, resource availability, knowledge of how different programs and services work, and other factors.
  • Recognizes that in addition to those challenges outside the control of schools, some of our District policies and practices contribute to inequities in students’ abilities to access and succeed in our programs, and to participate fully in the learning and development opportunities those programs provide.
  • Recognizes that while many students are impacted by both out-of-school and in-school inequities, some groups of students are particularly impacted, including students of color, English language learners, and students with special needs.
  • Recognizes that the responsibility for student success is broadly shared by our Board and District, our families, our community, and our students.

In light of these issues, and to hold ourselves and our District accountable to serve each and every student academically, socially, and emotionally, the Board:

  • Commits to work with our Bellevue School District community, including representatives of our students of color, our English language learners, and our students with special needs, to identify, review, and revise key relevant board policies during this school year.
    • Together, we will strive to ensure that our policies promote strong services, remove obstacles, and do not unintentionally allow or actively introduce any barriers to achieving the innovative, individualized, equitable and exceptional education of any students, including our students of color, our English language learners, and our students with special needs.
    • We will also ensure that our policies include clear language that affirms all students and reinforces our commitment to helping each and every student learn and thrive, particularly those students who are experiencing barriers to their education, including our students of color, our English language learners, and our students with special needs.
  • Commits to continue to collaborate with our community partners to seek innovative and effective solutions to help meet the needs of all students by breaking down barriers that keep our students from learning and thriving, including our students of color, our English language learners, and our students with special needs.
  • Commits to monitor progress on our strategic plan and share our findings with our community.
    • We will evaluate overall progress in ways that allow us to ensure that each and every student is experiencing an innovative, individualized, rigorous and relevant education, particularly those students who are experiencing barriers to their education, including our students of color, our English language learners, and our students with special needs.
    • We will be open and reflective about our challenges and points of failure; and we will support and hold our District accountable to make relevant changes.
  • Commits to actively promote, embody, and hold ourselves and our District accountable to operating by our values and providing a culture of service towards each and every student, our families, our community partners, and each other.

In support of this resolution, the board approved its equity committee request to engage the community through the Superintendent’s Equity Advisory Group.
