Meeting Highlights
- Public Comments Period: The timing of public comments was discussed by the board. Currently public comments are scheduled at 4 p.m. which can be challenging for community members. Two proposals were made:
- 15 minutes allotted at the beginning of the meeting and 15 minutes allotted at 6 p.m.
- Public comments at approximately 6 p.m. during the first board meeting of the month, and at the beginning of the second board meeting of the month.
The board preferred the second proposal and the Governance Committee will bring this policy for second reading at the next meeting on Oct. 16, 2018.
- Board Assessment: The board voted to begin a Balanced Governance Formative Assessment & Comprehensive Evaluation, starting in January.
- New Board Meeting Date: The June 18, 2019 board meeting date was revised to be June 11, 2019 to accommodate graduations in the district.
Board Actions
- Executive Director of Schools John Harrison presented second readings of the following revised policies:
- Policy 3240: Student Conduct Expectations
- Policy 6605: Student Safety Walking to School and Riding Buses
The board asked for additional revisions to Policy 3240 and approved the amendments to Policy 6605.
- Harrison, along with Public Records Officer Helen Boyer, presented the first reading of revised Policy 4040: Public Access to District Records.
- As part of the public comments period discussion mentioned in the Meeting Highlights, the board heard a first reading of revisions for Policy 1400: Meeting Conduct, Order of Business, Quorum and Public Comment.

Board Updates
- Directors Christine Chew and Carolyn Watson will attend the Oct. 11 PABS meeting to share the board’s resolution affirming the board’s commitment to each and every student, which was passed at the Sept. 25 board meeting.
- The board approved having culture of service training in the evenings while in Spokane for the annual WSSDA conference.
- The board will visit Tillicum Middle School on Oct. 11.
