Dear Bellevue Learning Community:
I send you this important message during the month of February – with this week marking Black Lives Matter Week and the month marking Black History Month.
Though we are wracked by a pandemic and still developing how and when we will return our students to in-person learning, other important work should and must continue. For us the critical work of equity is a year-round effort and our commitment is not just marked by a week or a month.
I would like to highlight some of the work that has happened and is evolving on our equity journey to ensure that we “…affirm and inspire each and every student to learn and thrive as creators of their future world.”
Like all journeys, there are ups and downs and obstacles in our path. We learned that we have far to go this year when we read about the painful experience of one of our own, Newport junior Lauren Kirkpatrick in her Seattle Times essay: Racism in the Bellevue School District has thrived for too long. From Lauren’s voice we know that we have much work to do when it comes to creating a safe and welcoming environment. Her words especially touch me because I carry my own painful memories growing up as a Latino student in Colorado. Every student deserves to feel at home in their school by creating a culture of dignity and inclusion.
In response to Lauren’s essay and the many events taking place in our society, I am working with a newly formed student advisory group on a book study of Belonging Through a Culture of Dignity: The Keys to Successful Equity Implementation by Floyd Cobb and John Krownapple. Informed by this book, I will host a Town Hall led with our students and discuss some of the ideas that are embedded in this book, with a focus on action to improve the sense of belonging for our students.
In our learning community we champion equity year-round and our goal is to create the beloved community so powerfully embodied in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King envisioned a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love of one’s fellow human beings, which all are embraced and none discriminated against. I fully endorse efforts—not only in February but throughout the year—that engage students, families, staff, and community organizations as advocates and partners for equity.
A big step toward this has and will continue to be in the curriculum that prepares our students for life after leaving our learning community. In our Annual Plan we set the goal of creating a curriculum that minimizes bias, ensures multiple perspectives, is culturally responsive, and accurately reflects and celebrates the contributions from a broader diversity of people.
Our work is truly a community effort. As part of this work, we are engaging a larger part of our community through our Equity Advisory Group. The families, staff and community members who make up this group guide our critical equity work by providing recommendations to us. We will continue to count on the Equity Advisory Group as our critical friend, relying on their perspectives to help us continue to champion a culture of belonging.
Please join me on this journey. Everyone is essential and necessary on this path to creating a more inclusive and loving community.

Como todos los viajes, hay altibajos y obstáculos en nuestro camino. Aprendimos que tenemos mucho camino por recorrer este año cuando leímos sobre la dolorosa experiencia de uno de los nuestros, Lauren Kirkpatrick, una estudiante de tercer año de Newport, en su ensayo del Seattle Times: El racismo en el distrito escolar de Bellevue ha prosperado durante demasiado tiempo. Por el relato de Lauren sabemos que tenemos mucho trabajo por hacer cuando se trata de crear un entorno seguro y acogedor. Nuestro trabajo es verdaderamente un esfuerzo comunitario. Como parte de este trabajo, estamos involucrando a una gran parte de nuestra comunidad a través de nuestro Grupo Asesor de Equidad. Las familias, el personal y los miembros de la comunidad que componen este grupo guían nuestro trabajo crítico de equidad al brindarnos recomendaciones. 我们的工作确实是整个学区的努力。作为这项工作的一部分，我们正在通过我们的社会公正顾问小组在本学区吸引更多的人。组成该顾问小组的家长、教职员工和社区成员通过向我们提供建议，指导我们在社会公正方面的重要工作。我们将继续把社会公正顾问小组当作我们的重要朋友，通过听取他们的意见继续倡导包容文化。
