On Thursday, October 28, the Bellevue School District Board of Directors conducted a special meeting, where they voted to offer an additional one-year contract for Interim Superintendent, Dr. Art Jarvis for the 2022-23 school year. Jarvis was appointed as BSD’s interim superintendent in May 2021.

“It’s been an honor to serve Bellevue School District over the past few months, and it will be an honor to continue to serve this community,” Jarvis remarked. “Even through constant change and challenges, the staff and students here have proven that Bellevue is great and will continue to be great. I am hopeful for the future as we work collectively to achieve our mission by providing an exceptional education for all students.”

Jarvis comes to the district with extensive experience as a leader in education, previously serving as superintendent in Tacoma, Enumclaw and South Whidbey school districts, and interim superintendent in Shelton, Renton and Peninsula school districts. As attestations of his leadership and wealth of knowledge in the educational sphere, Jarvis has twice been named the Washington State Superintendent of the Year.

In a shared statement, the BSD Board of Directors said, “Dr. Jarvis’s world class experience, leadership and service to the district have been particularly helpful during this time of healing as we recover from the pandemic and move forward. This superintendent renewal promotes the stability we need. Efforts must stay focused on student well-being and academic progress, which includes supporting our educators and staff who make that possible. Our board acknowledges the near-term priorities of our community of students, families, educators, and staff, while also fostering continued engagement about long term planning. As we affirm the time and support our community needs to re-engage in our core work and grow our collective capacity, we also celebrate our students and the joy they bring to this year. We welcome this next phase of further evaluating our district’s needs and bolstering our existing strengths as we foster excellence and fulfill our vision of developing students as creators of their future world.”

The Bellevue School District, with nearly 20,000 students and 29 schools, is a diverse and dynamic district in East King County, Washington. Its mission is “To serve each and every student academically, socially, and emotionally, through a rigorous and relevant education that is innovative and individualized. As a learning community that values one another’s humanity, we strive to provide courageous support for an equitable and exceptional education for all students.”
