BSD recently created a new Special Education Family Liaison position to support students and families. Gita McIntyre has taken on this role after spending the last 15 years supporting families in various educational settings. Gita is a Bellevue resident and BSD parent, and she looks forward to working with families, educators, and the community using a collaborative approach to support student educational needs.

Roles of the Special Education Family Liaison

The Special Education Family Liaison is a new position that serves as a bridge between families and the Special Education department. The position aims to promote family and community engagement by providing information to families, students, educators and community partners about Special Education services in the district. The Liaison will provide confidential and unbiased guidance, information and support. Please note that the Liaison cannot advocate on behalf of any party and does not determine the services provided. Here are some ways the Special Education Family Liaison could be utilized:

  • Help with understanding Special Education processes and procedures
  • Confidential consultation about a Special Education concern
  • Referral to disability-related community resources or the appropriate personnel in the Special Education department
  • Development of communication strategies that help support a team approach to students’ special educational plans
