The Bellevue School District regularly monitors air quality and takes guidance from the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) about school activities that take place outdoors such as recess and physical education (PE), as well as athletic practices and games, based on the air quality index. Student and staff safety remains our top priority amid changing conditions.

What guidance does BSD follow regarding air quality?

BSD follows guidance provided by WA DOH, which is based on air quality readings from the Washington Smoke Blog and the Puget Sound Clear Air Agency.

Below are recommendations BSD schools can implement when air quality varies in range:

  • Recess: Students are allowed to remain indoors.
  • Physical Education (PE): Students are allowed to remain indoors and monitor symptoms for those who participate. Increase rest periods for students as needed.
  • Athletics: Students are allowed to opt out and monitor symptoms for those who participate. Increase rest periods for students and only allow for light activity. Move activities indoors or cancel activities that cannot be moved indoors.

Families can check with their school and BSD Athletics and Activities for information on specific events and activities. General updates may be found in District News on bsd405.org.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
