The Bellevue School District seeks to fill a School Board Director vacancy for Director District 3 due to Director Joyce Shui’s resignation effective January 5, 2024.

In accordance with Board Policy 1114 and Procedure 1114P (Board Member Resignation and Vacancy) and RCW 28A.343.370, members of the community are encouraged to apply for the position or nominate candidates for the position. Nominees and applicants must be registered voters who reside in Director District 3.

Process Timeline

UPDATE:  At the end of the Board’s Thursday, February 15, 2024 Special Meeting and after an executive session to discuss and evaluate the qualifications of a candidate for appointment to elective office, the Board took action to advance two candidates as semi-finalists to be appointed to the open Director position. The Board will hold another Special Meeting on Monday, February 26 at 6:00 pm at the WISC to complete the appointment process. The Board will first meet in executive session in the Baker Room to evaluate the qualifications of the semi-finalists and then will complete its deliberation and selection process in the Rainier Room in a public session that will also be livestreamed.

Time Commitment and Compensation

Regular board meetings are typically held the first and third Thursday of each month except for February and July when there is one meeting per month. In addition, special board planning sessions are scheduled on Mondays of Board meeting weeks.

Each Board Director may receive compensation of $50 per day, or a portion thereof, for attending board meetings and for performing other services on behalf of the School District, not to exceed $4,800 per year.

Process Summary

In an executive session on February 8, 2024, the Board Directors reviewed the qualifications of the candidates. Five applicants were selected and interviewed at a special board meeting open to the public on February 15, 2024. The Board met in Executive Session to review the qualifications of the candidates and has elected to advance two candidates for a second round of interviews. The interviews will be held in Executive Session on Monday, February 26th, at 6pm. A public deliberation and announcement will be held in person at 8:00pm in the Rainier Room at WISC, and will also be livestreamed.

The newly appointed board director will be sworn in at the regular school board meeting on March 7, 2024, and will serve the remainder of the unexpired term through November 2025. The person selected to fill the unexpired term is eligible to run for election in 2025, along with any other candidates who file for election in accordance with the King County Elections filing date.
