The most common issues I discuss with students are around friendships and problem solving.  Below are some of the tools we use here at Cherry Crest along with some additional resources and information within these topics.

Both of our Social/Emotional Learning curriculums have a problem solving component:

For grades K, 1, and 2 students learn the Second Step Problem-Solving Steps.

  • S: Say the Problem (without blame)
  • T: Think of Solutions (that are safe and respectful)
  • E: Explore Consequences (what could happen if…)
  • P: Pick the Best Solution (and make your plan)

For grades 3, 4, & 5 students learn to solve problems with The Blueprint.

  • Describe what happened using the RULER Skills:
    • Recognize & Label: How did I feel? How did the other person feel?
    • Understand: What caused my feelings? What caused the other person’s feelings?
    • Express & Regulate: How did I express and regulate my feelings? How did the other person express and regulate their feelings?
    • Reflect & Plan: What could I have done to handle the situation better? What can I do now?

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
