New Eastgate 5th Grade Teacher Mrs. Mona Patel loves mathematics and she loves being able to share that passion with students. Mrs. Patel and parent volunteer Mr. Dragos Margineantu have been working with a group of dedicated fifth grade students who make up Eastgate’s Math Club.  In preparation for the “Math is Cool” competition, the students have been meeting bi-weekly from 8:00 – 8:45 am since the beginning of December.  The students work in teams to solve challenging math problems and communicate their method for solving the problems to help learn about efficient problem solving processes. Some of the other things students work on are Mental Math, Team Test, and Relay.

The hard work of the team paid off! The Math is Cool competition took place on Friday, March 10th at Mount Rainier High School from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.  There were over 20 teams in the division and Eastgate placed 4th overall!  Congratulations to the Eastgate Math Club!

Now that the competition is over, Math Club will reduce down to meeting once a week. There will also be a fourth grade class starting after Spring Break.
