Picture Retake Day is Wednesday

All students should have a picture taken this year, regardless of whether or not a family chooses to order pictures. This picture is used for the school identification, the yearbook, and for teacher gradebooks. Our picture retake day is Wednesday, October 19. Students will be called from class. Families who wish or order pictures may do so at mylifetouch.com and use the following Picture Day ID: EVTGZD6JZ.

Homecoming

International’s 2022 Homecoming is this Saturday, October 22nd from 8pm-10pm at International School!  Tickets cost $12 with an ASB card and $15 without for presale.  Tickets are $15 at the door.   The theme this year is Once Upon A Time, and the dress is casual.  Only pre-approved guests will be admitted into the event, and students will need to provide school ID at the door.

We need volunteers who can help chaperone this dance. Chaperones need to come by 7:45 so ASB officers can explain what to do. Our special events and dances cannot happen without chaperones and volunteers! Please email Matt Lyon if you are interested.  [email protected]

We want to ensure that every student has a fun and safe dance. When entering the dance…

  • All students need to have attended at least 5 of 7 periods of the school day on a Friday preceding the dance. This is in accordance with athletic/activity guidelines. (Administrative Procedure 2151P: II. Attendance Requirements)
  • All students and guests must have current photo ID at the dance.
  • Backpacks, purses, and bags are not allowed at the dance.
  • Dress and appearance must be consistent with the International High School Dress Code. Students may be required to change their dress or appearance or be denied entry into the dance.
  • Only students who were the original purchaser of a ticket may enter the dance. Tickets cannot be resold, traded, or given away. Ticket numbers and student ID must match at the door.

Your safety during the dance is very important to us. Please be aware that…

  • All school rules and sanctions for not following rules are in effect during this event.
  • Students who appear to be under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance will be subject BSD consequences. Parents of students will be called to come to the dance to take charge of their student(s) if the student is:
    • found to have used alcohol and/or a controlled substance or
    • found to have in their possession alcohol and/or a controlled substance, and/or
    • under the influence of alcohol and/or a controlled substance.

Halloween

International students are welcome to wear costumes to school on October 31st. If you do want to wear a costume to school, please follow these guidelines:

  • No masks/decorations that covers the face
  • No weapons or look-alike weapons.
  • No gore or costumes that depict violence or violent characters
  • Content of the costume needs to be appropriate for school.
  • No oversized costumes that create a hazard walking in the halls
  • Costumes that promote the use of illegal substances or activities, are derogatory or disrespectful are not allowed.

The IS community is a diverse community with students representing cultures, traditions, and religions from around the world. In order for students to demonstrate the Titan Values, we ask that students avoid costumes that would be considered “cultural appropriation.”  This is the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture.

Questions to consider:

  • Why might some people find some costumes offensive?
  • How do you appreciate a culture you are not part of?

Does my costume:

  • Play off stereotypes?
  • Mock cultural or religious symbols such as dreadlocks, bindis, afros etc.?
  • Attempt to represent an entire culture or ethnic group?
  • Trivialize human suffering, oppression or marginalization?

For Families: An FYI about Cookies Clothing

Schools in the area have seen a rise in students wearing “Cookies” brand clothing. While this has not yet been observed at International, we wanted to make sure families are aware of this proactively in order to make appropriate decisions.

For those who are unfamiliar with this brand (which is available through local stores such as Zumiez), it is the largest legal cannabis brand and has a mix of dispensaries around the country as well as a clothing line that would appear to be “safe” if you were unfamiliar with the company. We want students and families to know that wearing of this clothing would not be allowed at school (Procedure 3224P). The first time we see this at school, we would ask students to cover up or turn the shirt inside-out—similar to other situations of inappropriate content on clothing. A student has a repeat incident, it would be subject to discipline under BSD Misconduct.
