Newport received the following letter from a parent from an opposing team at a recent volleyball tournament. It celebrates the character and qualities we seek for all of our students.

“I wanted to take a second to email you about an experience we had with the Newport Volleyball C Team during a tournament in Bothell a few weeks ago. For reference, I am a parent of a volleyball player from Skyline High School, who was also at the tournament.   We played Newport early in the day.

“The first thing I noticed was how amazing your coaching staff was with the girls. No matter what the play, no matter if it was a point lost or won, an error, or anything in between, the coaches were upbeat, positive and incredibly supportive of their girls.

“Second, an incident occurred with another team during subsequent games. And both Newport and Skyline had separate bad experiences with coaches and players. During Skyline’s game with, the Newport team (seeing how discouraged our girls were), came on the sidelines to sit and watch, and proceeded to VERY loudly cheer on our girls. They not only did this during this game, but found our team later on and continued their support of our girls throughout the day.

“Sometimes in high school sports, we forget that the most wonderful thing is not winning, but the friendships formed. Your girls were incredible. You should be EXTREMELY proud of this team. They should be commended for their incredible sportsmanship in the face of adversity, and their kindness and selfless character that was shown that day. They clearly are led by coaches that encourage and teach this, and so I want to make sure it doesn’t go unrecognized.

“We can’t wait to see these kids next year at volleyball games. And a huge thank you to these girls and their coaching staff for supporting our Skyline team. “

“Thank you kindly,  Mom of Skyline HS volleyball player”
