This year, Newport High School is embarking on a 3-year physical re-shaping of our campus.  When you arrive you will see that Newport is truly “under construction.”

Hundreds of hours of intentional planning should result in a campus designed to better fit the needs of our students, staff and families.  In the end, our campus should be a visible space where the form follows function.   

We have expanded “under construction” to help us talk about the subtle and more obvious essential shifts we all can make in education to ensure all students have a  strong foundation in place. Together we will continue to explore what foundational structures need to be implemented academically, socially, and emotionally to ensure our students are all better able to navigate their world.

How can we help all students grow as capable and competent creators of their “future world” by positively and productively impacting their “current world” today, in our classrooms and in our hallways? To that end, there is much to explore and share.

Newport High School will remain open throughout the three-year construction project.

Fall & Winter 2022 Expected Timeline & Changes to Regular Operations

September to December 2022

Entire Campus

• Staff parking lot is temporarily closed for two water-detention vaults being formed up and poured with concrete. There are new water and sewer lines being installed there as well.
• The goal is to reopen the staff (west) parking lot by mid-October.
• Gravel base for the concrete pad of the gym is installed at grade awaiting water, power, and mechanical systems.
• Once those are in, the concrete will be poured.
• Next the structural steel will begin to fly—estimated at the end of October.
• Utilities continue to be installed to support the new facility.

Already accomplished:

• Established safe construction zones by walling off the south end of the Commons, closing exits there, and installing safe external walkways for emergency exits.
• Moved portable classrooms from south side to north side of main buildings.
• South access loop by old portables was closed permanently.

Athletics Facilities

• Be sure to check locations before heading to a game.
• Through the winter 2022-2023, we will see the steel framing of the athletic facilities take shape.
• Meanwhile, our existing gyms and locker rooms remain fully functional.
• The planned date for opening the new Athletic Facilities is Fall 2023.
