Students and families who attended our Family Mental Health Night last week focused on the helpful advice from our student speakers. Our adult speakers pointed out that the tactics that these students found most helpful by their junior year were all among the recommendations made by our staff and on our website in the Virtual Wellness Room or the Study Skills pages.
Not all the students found the same tactics helpful. All experimented to find the best fit.
One of the key takeaways from students and adults was that both students and families can relax if everything doesn’t come together at once.
Over the high school years, students who make a plan for growth will develop the intellectual and emotional habits to help them succeed and the self-care habits (intellectual, emotional, and physical) that keep them thriving and growing. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors aren’t meant to have everything in hand. It’s a four-year journey of growth to get prepared for “adulting.” Keep the focus on steady improvement and growth, not on having everything perfect. A growing teen is perfectly on track.
The night was rich with discussion and ideas from students who have learned the skills to navigate a challenging time.
We plan to hold more of these discussion events to help students and families learn from our veteran students.
