LobbyGuard – A New System for Visiting Puesta del Sol’s Campus:  LobbyGuard is now live and running in the Main Office. LobbyGuard is a self check-in touch screen kiosk for all visitors. It is designed to enhance school safety and was piloted last year at Wilburton Elementary School. To view a short video on LobbyGuard and additional information on the new system, click here.

PTA Ice Cream Social Thank You: Last Friday’s Ice Cream Social was a huge success! Hundreds of students and families attended our annual back-to-school celebration! Thank you to the PTA and all the parents who organized the event, and a special thank you to PTA Special Events Carmel Sasaki for her leadership! Join us at the next major PTA community event, the annual Walkathon on October 4!

Drop-off and Pick-up for Buses at other Schools:  A friendly reminder to be extra mindful of other schools’ parking zones before and after school when dropping off and picking up your student from bus stops. For example, at Eastgate Elementary, the bus zone needs to be clear from 8:35-9:15 and 3:00-3:50. Buses cannot make the turns when cars are parked in the fire zone. Families waiting for buses need to park in a parking spot outside of the Eastgate drop off/pick up times. Thank you!

Puesta del Sol Visitor & Parent Guidelines:  On page 22-25 of the Puesta del Sol Community Handbook (click here), there is an important insert developed last school year in collaboration with PTA leadership and the school district. Please take a moment to review these guidelines which include important information on communication best practices with your student’s teacher, parent volunteering, observing/shadowing your student, addressing questions or resolving concerns, and confidentiality and professional boundaries.

September Safety Drill: On Friday we had our scheduled Safety Drill for the month of September. This month’s drill was a fire drill, practicing what we would do if we needed to evacuate the building. Students learned about leaving the building quickly and assembling in a designated location on the upper field.

We encourage you to talk with your students about our safety and emergency preparedness drills. An important next step might be planning a drill in your own home and checking your smoke detectors to make sure they are working correctly.

For more information on fire safety, you might want to visit the National Fire Protection Association “Kids” page at http://www.sparky.org/ or their parent resource page at http://www.sparky.org/parents.

Spirit Wear Wednesdays are Back:  We encourage students and families to join our staff in showing off our Puesta del Sol pride each Wednesday by wearing shirts, hats, pins and other apparel and accessories that represent Puesta del Sol! For more information on spirit wear offered by the PTA, click here.

Courage (El Valor) – Our Virtue of the Month for September:  Throughout the school year, we plan monthly assemblies based on our virtues, including teachers recognizing students for demonstrating our monthly Virtues. We encourage families to discuss, revisit and reinforce our monthly virtues at home. Our Noticias will include general explanations as well as talking points to support discussions, for example:

What is Courage?

Courage is personal bravery in the face of fear. It is doing what needs to be done even when it is really hard or scary. Courage is going ahead even when you feel like giving up. It is needed in trying new things, admitting mistakes and then doing the right thing, and strength in your heart.

How do you practice Courage?

Courage helps you do the right thing. When you feel afraid, name the fear and then let it go. Then do what you really want to do. Admit mistakes and learn from them. Keep trying. Stand up for what you know is right even if all your friends are doing something wrong. Ask for help when you need it. Let courage fill your heart.
