Clarification on Transition to Hybrid:  Recently, communication posted from the district regarding the transition to in-person hybrid learning has been general in nature and has not detailed the plans for hybrid learning for Grades K-2 at Puesta del Sol and Jing Mei Elementary. Please note that both individual schools continue to plan for Grades K-2 (and all Grades K-5) to function in a A/B Hybrid Learning Model. If your Grade K-5 student is in Group A, they will attend in person on Monday and Thursday each week, and will learn remotely the other 3 days each week. If your Grade K-5 student is in Group B, they will attend in person on Tuesday and Friday each week, and will learn remotely the other 3 days each week.

For more information, please scroll to the bottom of the Noticias where there is a reminder communication from the August 26 Noticias del Director.

Share Your Thoughts with Us:  A reminder that the district would like to know what went well during the first week of school and what we can improve. Please join our ThoughtExchange conversation. Families have until midnight on Monday, September 21, to complete it. Your feedback will help us get this year off to a strong start as we launch with remote learning and prepare to transition to hybrid.

Fall 2020 – A Guide for Families:  Please click on the link below to access a new publication from BSD: Fall 2020 – A Guide for Families. The Guide provides helpful information on a variety of topics for this unique start to the school year, including attendance, grading and assessment, and Transitioning to Hybrid Learning.

One important section of the Guide to draw your attention to is called Help and Support on page 9. From the section:

To address a concern, start closest to the situation with the person who has the most information. If additional people are needed to reach a resolution, move along the chain of communication [see chain of communication on page 9]. We recommend first talking with the teacher or staff member closest to the concern to promote direct and open conversation so problems can be resolved quickly and respectfully.

Help with Technology: Student and family technology support is available Monday through Friday online, by phone and in-person. Visit for details.

PTA Principal Coffee – September 30 at 6:30 PM:  Join us for our first PTA Principal Coffee, conducted via MS Teams. We wish to hear from you on how the school is going thus far, what is working well with the temporary remote learning model, and what questions or needs you have moving forward. The Principal Coffee will be held as a regular Teams meeting allowing attendees to engage, ask questions and offer feedback. Use the following link to join:

Curriculum Night – October 8, 2020:  Curriculum Night will take place virtually this fall. In order to support family schedules, a recorded presentation will be made by teachers, along with recorded presentation from Puesta del Sol administration. Links to both recorded presentations will be emailed to families by the end of the workday on October 8. Opportunities for dialogue and questions/answers with teachers will start in October via Fall Conferences.

From Previous Communications

2020-2021 Official Notices:  This year’s Official Notices are available on the BSD website. We ask that you please review each of them, including:

Student Privacy Laws and Outside Tutoring/Support:  Puesta del Sol staff members have been receiving requests from parents as well as individuals providing tutoring/support that are operating independent learning pods for our students during remote learning.

While we appreciate the multiple efforts parents and families are undertaking to support students, we still must be vigilant in following our policies and procedures, especially those related to health, safety and privacy. We will make some curriculum and learning materials available, but please be mindful that although we are remote, our legal and ethical responsibilities remain. Therefore, staff cannot share details regarding any students, or providing access to Teams classes to any individuals that are not school employees, approved volunteers or service providers. FERPA, Policy 3231 Student Records and Procedure 3231P Student Records oblige all district employees to safeguard student privacy.

Top 5 BSD Tech Tips:  Supporting student technology needs during remote learning is important to the Bellevue School District. The following are the top five questions families have and their solutions:

1.    What is my ParentVUE activation key?
2.    How do I monitor my student’s online behavior?
3.    My student’s device is constantly freezing in Teams. What do I do?
4.    My student is unable to access content that should be available. What do I do?
5.    Where do I find my student’s Teams meeting links?

Online Student Behavioral Expectations:  Please ensure that you have a conversation with your student about these expectations. This includes the Student Guidelines for Chats and Direct Calls with Microsoft Teams below. Let’s partner together to ensure our students are set up for success. ¡Gracias!

Amity Intern Update:  Despite last spring’s announcement that new Visa restrictions would not allow Amity interns to arrive to the US until January, we are committed! We have secured nearly all of our Amity interns for the second half of the school year, and are excited to welcome them to Puesta del Sol! Stay tuned for more information coming this fall.

School Meals During Our Remote Start:  With the Bellevue School District opening the 2020-21 school year in a remote learning model, we want to ensure that students have access to the nutrition they need to succeed. The Meals2Go program, offered by our Nutrition Services team, is designed to provide a grab and go breakfast and lunch option for families to access for their students.

  • Meals will be available for district enrolled students each school day from seven (7) regional locations.
  • Due to a change in federal regulations, Nutrition Services is no longer able to continue the practice of offering free meals to all children.  Meals accessed through the Meals2Go program will be charged to a student’s school meal account, similar to the traditional school year.
  • Families are encouraged to complete an application for free or reduced-price school meals if they are in need of assistance.  The 2020-21 application can be found at
  • To minimize interruptions with the instructional day, the pickup times for meals at our regional locations have been shifted to the late afternoon/early evening.

Meals2Go Locations & Times

  • Enatai Elementary 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Highland Middle School 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Newport Heights Elementary 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Odle Middle School 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Sammamish High School 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
  • Tillicum Middle School 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.
  • Tyee Middle School 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Meals2Go program launched on Wednesday, September 2. Meals picked up on this day are intended for students to enjoy on their first day of school, September 3!

Families will utilize a pre-order form to place an order over the weekend for their student’s needs for the following week.  The pre-order form will collect important information such as the student’s name, student ID# and pick up location which will help our curbside lines run quickly and smoothly.

Look for more information regarding the Meals2Go pre-order process on the Bellevue School District website the week of August 24.

August 26 Communication on Fall Instruction at Puesta del Sol:  Click here to view a video announcement on updates to Puesta del Sol’s instructional plan for this fall.

As noted in the video announcement, we are relieved that after weeks of planning, both Puesta del Sol and Jing Mei Elementary have plans to offer dual language and immersion instruction to all students this year in both Hybrid and Virtual. We heard loud and clear from families that this was a major priority.

To allow for all students to receive dual language/immersion instruction, however, Puesta del Sol and Jing Mei must make certain adjustments given that school budgets state-wide are very tight this year, and no additional funding for staffing is available across the district. Specifically, Puesta del Sol and Jing Mei are planning to offer a full Kindergarten-Fifth Grade rotating A/B Hybrid Learning Model. In addition, some Spanish Dual Language program students will enroll for the school year in the Virtual Learning class in Kindergarten, third and fifth grade. And finally, Fourth Grade Teacher Angela Hamouda will teach a split third/fourth grade class.

Please note that the Virtual Learning model will still continue at Puesta del Sol as planned for students who signed up for this model. The Puesta del Sol Virtual Learning model will be conducted in Spanish by a Puesta del Sol teacher, and will include some students from the BSD Spanish Dual Language program in Kindergarten, Grades 2 and 5.

Below is a summary of what the larger BSD elementary learning plan is, and what is both the same and different at Puesta del Sol and Jing Mei compared to the BSD elementary plan:

Disclaimer: Please remember that all students will begin in the Temporary Remote Learning/Hybrid Learning schedule for at least the first 6 weeks of school (click here for more details):

BSD Elementary Learning Plan Puesta del Sol/Jing Mei Learning Plan
Hybrid Grades K-2:  Students attend full time in person NA
Hybrid Grades 3-5: Students will divide their time between in-school and remote learning; Students assigned to Group A or Group B. Each group attends school in-person 2 days per week and will learn remotely 3 days per week. Hybrid Grades K-5: All K-5 students will divide their time between in-school and remote learning; Students assigned to Group A or Group B. Each group attends school in-person 2 days per week and will learn remotely 3 days per week.
Virtual/Full Remote Grades K-5:  Students attend remote learning and do not return to school for in-person learning. Virtual/Full Remote Grades K-5:  Students attend remote learning and do not return to school for in-person learning.

We know that this plan will likely impact K-2 families who were expecting in-person learning Monday-Friday when school resumes. Despite the fact that the resumption of in-person school is at least 6 weeks away, we recognize that this plan presents a potential hardship for families. It’s unfortunate and something we regret when working hard to maintain school-wide language immersion in the face of COVID school closures. Our deepest apologies, in advance, for how this impacts you and your family.

If you have any questions or feedback, please email me directly at

Please note that sibling schedules will be aligned for the A/B Hybrid Learning Model at all grades.
