Gratitude and Support for the Holidays: As we approach Winter Break and the holidays, we wish to convey our deepest appreciation for hard work and determination our students, staff and families have wowed us with throughout the fall. The individual and collective efforts of our Beloved Familia have been heroic in the face of the challenges we all faced returning to in-person learning this fall. You all deserve a safe, restful and peaceful holiday break!
Additional gratitude and acknowledgment goes to our PTA and the many Puesta del Sol families who made generous contributions to families in need this holiday season. A heartfelt thank you to parent Sabrina Henderson and Admin Designee Sr. Sheffield for coordinating contributions again this year! ¡Gracias de todo corazón!
February 8 Levy Renewal: Bellevue School District is asking our community to consider renewing two levies to continue funding for our students and schools. The levies bridge the gap between state funding for our district and the cost of tools, programs and facilities our students need to become creators of their future world.
Educational Programs and Operations Levy Renewal – Continues funding for critical day-to-day school operations to ensure EVERY student in our district has access to:
- High quality teaching and learning by funding:
- Additional school staff
- 7th period classes and tutorial at middle schools and high schools
- World languages in middle school
- Supports to ensure the wellbeing of students by funding:
- Additional school nurses
- Student programs not fully funded by the state including:
- Special education
- STEM programs and AP classes
- Opportunities for students not funded by the state including:
- Orchestra, band, music, and art in elementary schools
- After school activities
Technology and Capital Projects Levy Renewal – Maintains our investment in student technology and facilities, so every BSD student has access to a safe and modern learning environment. Renewal of the Technology and Capital Projects Levy continues critical funding for:
- Exceptional education for all students
- Access to new technologies and software that support student learning
- Collaborative STEM learning
- A computer or tablet for every student
- Integrated digital curriculum
- Software maintenance and updates
- Classroom technology and training for teachers
- Technology for teaching and learning in our classrooms
- Professional development to ensure our educators have the technology training they need
- Maintaining and updating our school buildings
- Large scale school improvements like the carpeting, roofing, and heating and cooling systems
- Repairs and maintenance to our school buildings
Update on Assistant Principal Mary Colón: Starting this January, Sra. Colón will be shifting from the Puesta del Sol familia to support the BSD Virtual Academy. The BSD Virtual Academy has had a number of maternity/paternity leaves and has been in need of additional support for students, families and staff. Given Sra. Colon’s own personal and family needs right now, this felt like the right move for her and her family. We are so fortunate to have had Sra. Colon as part of our community even for such a short amount of time. We want to thank her for her heart, joy and leadership, and wish her the best in her new role with the BSD Virtual Academy. I also want to take a moment to thank Sr. Sheffield who has stepped out of his PE role to support Puesta del Sol students in Ms. Colón’s absence, and am thrilled that he is willing to continue in this role through the end of the year. Likewise, Sr. Nassar has done an outstanding job filling in for Sr. Sheffield in PE, and will continue in the role until the end of the school year.
Important Update on the New Building: As most of you know, building construction is underway on a new facility for our school community. However, recently, we were made aware of an update to a local union strike that began December 3, 2021, that may impact our plans. Construction to the new Puesta Del Sol Elementary School will be paused soon because of a labor strike by the Teamsters Local 174 division’s concrete workers. We do not know how long the strike will continue or the amount of time that work may be delayed. As a result, this may impact our ability to move into the new building prior to the start of the 2022/2023 school year. The district will continue work on the building, but will have to stop at some point because work cannot proceed without concrete which is critical to the construction and building process. BSD will provide more information as soon as it comes available.

Pre-arranged Absence Reminders: A reminder that if your student will be missing school for vacation, a family event, a tournament or most reasons other than illness or appointments, you must submit a Pre-Arranged absence form 5 school days before the absence. Pre-arranged absence forms can be picked up at the front office or printed off the school website. If one is not turned in before the absence, your absence is unexcused. Only 5 Pre-Arranged absences PER school year will be excused, an extension of that are will be unexcused.
Change of Plans for After School Dismissal: If your plans for dismissal change for your student, such as a change from riding the bus to pick-up, please first alert the Puesta del Sol Main Office at email@example.com, then your student’s teacher.
Volunteer Clearance: A friendly reminder to complete the volunteer background check in advance, allowing at least 72 hours to process. Please note that we are not able to let volunteers proceed into classrooms, for example, without verified clearance.
Main Office Limitations: Our Main Office is a central hub and welcoming location for students, staff and families. Given this, it is often very busy with staff unable to facilitate every request. For example, please refrain from dropping off items—such as clothing, car seats and school projects—for other families to pick up. Main Office staff members are not able to take possession or be responsible for such items, and we recommend that families communicate directly with one another to deliver such items. Thank you for your support!
BSD Guide to Assessments: The new Guide to Assessments page currently features information about Star Testing, followed by an explanation of the unique Fall 2021 state SBA/WCAS tests. In the future, we will be adding additional content on various assessments. Link: https://bsd405.org/departments/curriculum/guide-to-assessments.
