Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:  Today students engaged in our virtual MLK assembly, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Importantly, our central message for honoring Dr. King’s legacy at the assembly was elevating the relevance and connection to our values at Puesta del Sol, specifically our values of unidad, amor e inclusión. We encourage you to ask you student/s their takeaways from the assembly and how we can all promote and live towards greater racial and social justice in our community, country and world.

Supporting our Jewish Community:  Many of you are aware of the recent violence towards members of the Jewish community in Texas this past weekend. Together we condemn these acts in the strongest terms. Acts of violence are never acceptable.

Along with collectively identifying and denouncing this increase in acts of hate, as we shared in a letter to our school community in June 2021, we must also commit to sustained education for ourselves and our students. Below are a several resources that we invite you to review and discuss with your students in developmentally appropriate ways.

Along with these resources, we encourage you to view the 40-minute recording from Puesta del Sol’s PTA Plática with Parent Jessica Fenton about her grandparents’ survival from the holocaust. Below is the link:  https://youtu.be/_vhzsVtpPX4

COVID Surge Precautions: During this recent increase in COVID cases, the Bellevue School District is asking schools to incorporate additional safety measures until February 18, including:

  • Postpone fieldtrips and in-person assemblies (unless virtual)
  • Host school-related meetings virtually
  • Limit visitors to essential needs; essential volunteers may continue

We recognize the inconvenience this may cause to many of our families. Thank you for your flexibility and grace during this time.

Family Engagement Survey: The Bellevue School District’s Department of Family Engagement is hosting its annual Family Engagement Survey from January 4 to February 1, 2022. Please look for an email from Panorama Education received on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, with a survey link and instructions.

The purpose of the survey is to gather feedback from you, our families, around how our school informs, supports, and empowers you to contribute to your student’s success. Your valuable feedback is essential to the continuous improvement and advancement of the family engagement practices in our school community, and we thank you in advance, for your participation.

Host an Amity Intern in 2022-2023: Puesta del Sol is looking for host families for our 2022-23 Amity interns. Host families play a vital role in the success of the program. By welcoming an intern from another country into their home, volunteer host families gain friendship, understanding, knowledge and a connection to the world. Host families will experience new tastes and customs and have the chance to practice their intern’s language. Your children will learn about different parts of the world from the intern and may receive extra help with their own language studies.

At Puesta del Sol, our host families typically host for 13 weeks but offer longer durations. You may select to host for Fall, Winter or Spring or half-year, and we will extend full year if necessary. The Amity Committee needs 20 host family applications for 6 interns to ensure improved matching and experience for our interns and families. You may make a preference for male or female and/or time of year. We are in need of families interested in hosting male interns.

To apply to be a host family, please fill out an application.

Update on Assistant Principal Mary ColónStarting this January, Sra. Colón will be shifting from the Puesta del Sol familia to support the BSD Virtual Academy. The BSD Virtual Academy has had a number of maternity/paternity leaves and has been in need of additional support for students, families and staff. Given Sra. Colon’s own personal and family needs right now, this felt like the right move for her and her family. We are so fortunate to have had Sra. Colon as part of our community even for such a short amount of time. We want to thank her for her heart, joy and leadership, and wish her the best in her new role with the BSD Virtual Academy. I also want to take a moment to thank Sr. Sheffield who has stepped out of his PE role to support Puesta del Sol students in Ms. Colón’s absence, and am thrilled that he is willing to continue in this role through the end of the year. Likewise, Sr. Nassar has done an outstanding job filling in for Sr. Sheffield in PE, and will continue in the role until the end of the school year.

Important Update on the New Building:  As most of you know, building construction is underway on a new facility for our school community. However, recently, we were made aware of an update to a local union strike that began December 3, 2021, that may impact our plans. Construction to the new Puesta Del Sol Elementary School will be paused soon because of a labor strike by the Teamsters Local 174 division’s concrete workers. We do not know how long the strike will continue or the amount of time that work may be delayed.  As a result, this may impact our ability to move into the new building prior to the start of the 2022/2023 school year. The district will continue work on the building, but will have to stop at some point because work cannot proceed without concrete which is critical to the construction and building process. BSD will provide more information as soon as it comes available.

Pre-arranged Absence Reminders: A reminder that if your student will be missing school for vacation, a family event, a tournament or most reasons other than illness or appointments, you must submit a Pre-Arranged absence form 5 school days before the absence. Pre-arranged absence forms can be picked up at the front office or printed off the school website. If one is not turned in before the absence, your absence is unexcused. Only 5 Pre-Arranged absences PER school year will be excused, an extension of that are will be unexcused.

Change of Plans for After School Dismissal:  If your plans for dismissal change for your student, such as a change from riding the bus to pick-up, please first alert the Puesta del Sol Main Office at puestaattendance@bsd405.org, then your student’s teacher.

Main Office Limitations:  Our Main Office is a central hub and welcoming location for students, staff and families. Given this, it is often very busy with staff unable to facilitate every request. For example, please refrain from dropping off items—such as clothing, car seats and school projects—for other families to pick up. Main Office staff members are not able to take possession or be responsible for such items, and we recommend that families communicate directly with one another to deliver such items. Thank you for your support!

BSD Guide to Assessments: The new Guide to Assessments page currently features information about Star Testing, followed by an explanation of the unique Fall 2021 state SBA/WCAS tests.  In the future, we will be adding additional content on various assessments.
