High school students can earn up to 4 credits for a Language that They Already Know 

This test is for World Language credit, so it is about language learning and it’s focusing on basic reading, writing, speaking and listening.

World Language Credit Program provides these opportunities for students:

– To honor and validate students’ first language and the languages of their families

– To provide opportunities for fluent and literate speakers to receive high school credit for their knowledge of these languages.

– Students who earn 4 credits also automatically earn the Seat of Bi-Literacy.

– To open up opportunities for students to access core subject credits required for graduation (This is a significant opportunity for ELL students who enter the – U.S. high school system mid-year or with limited core subject credits.)

– To prepare bilingual students for future career opportunities in private industry and to meet government needs for skilled bilingual speakers.

– To motivate students to take advanced courses in their heritage languages at their schools, in college or at ethnic community centers.

The ACTFL-aligned proficiency assessments are provided by commercial testing companies that give nationally-normed results.  To meet the needs of all the languages in our community, we use six different testing companies. This causes wide variations in cost.

The testing is free for students who qualify for fee waivers

• $30: STAMP4S Handwritten
• $50: WorldSpeak
• $132: ALTA
• $180: WAFLT Custom Test (For languages not tested by the others testing companies)

If you have not received an email confirmation, we are missing something from you – either payment or paperwork. Scholarships are available to eligible students through the counseling office.   Registration forms are also available in the office.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Phantom Lake Needs Volunteers

Phantom Lake is hosting a Science Fair on Thursday, April 2nd from 5:30- 8:00 PM. They are looking for 11 Students to help. If interested contact Carrie Lascano @ carrielascano@gmail.com;

Spiritridge Elementary has two big events coming up – Need Volunteers!

On April 5th we have our 50th Anniversary celebration. We would love to have a slide show presentation. We need photos from the year book scanned. I imagine it will take 2-3 hours of photo scanning at your convenience.

We also need some data entry volunteers. I have a number of names that need to be entered into our new database so we can send out the invites. This can also be done on your own time-I imagine it will take 3-4 hours.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up the event. This will be just setting up tables and decorating. Only about an hour of your time.

On June 12th, We have our annual school Carnival which is a anticipated event of the year. We are in the planning stages now and would love students who love to throw a family friendly party.  We need volunteers to help plan, set up and run this event.

Juniors & Seniors want to be a Camp Counselor?

Are you interested in being a Camp Counselor or Camp Orkila and recieving community hours at the same time? Tyee Middle School is looking for students to volunteers as camp counselors for their 6^th Grade Outdoor Education Camp @ Camp Orkila during the week of May 18-22. To be a camp counselor for Tyee Middle School’s 6th Grade OEE Camp at Camp Orkila! Please CAREFULLY read this letter, check your activities and calendar. If the training dates and camp dates work for you and your family, please apply!

1. On-line applications must be completed and submitted by Friday, APRIL 10^th
2. Discipline and attendance records, first semester grades and mid- second semester grades (as of April 10th) will be reviewed by your school administration.
3. Small group format interviews will be held the week of APRIL 20^th at Tyee Middle School room 2209.
4. We will select counselors based on application clearance (by school administration), interview results and the needs of our 6^th grade class.
5. All applicants will be notified of our selection by Friday, APRIL 24^th
6. Mandatory Training #1: Wednesday, APRIL 29^th 2:30 to 4:30 at Tyee Middle School
7. Mandatory Training #2, Wednesday, MAY 6^th 2:30 to 4:30 at Tyee Middle School
8. Mandatory Training #3: Monday, May 18^th 8:00 to 3:00 (at which you will also meet your cabin group!):
9. CAMP ORKILA! May 19 through May 22. (you will return to Tyee on the 22^nd between 12-1 pm)

Camp Counselors will receive 10 community service hours after successfully completing the three mandatory training sessions. In addition, counselors will receive 40 community service hours after successfully completing camp.

 

Jubilee Reach Middle School Coach Volunteers Needed! 

Do you love basketball or soccer? Have you wanted a fun opportunity to earn community service hours? Well, then you should volunteer at Bellevue Middle Schools as a Jubilee REACH coach or ref for their basketball and soccer teams this Spring. Practices start the week of March 23^rd and end the week of June 3^rd. Questions? It’s that time of year! Social Studies classes will be assigned times to meet in the library for student registration sessions with counselors the next two weeks. Please enter/exit the library quietly. Thank you!

• Monday, March 9: Library closed periods 1-4, and 7. Registration and classes in session.
• Tuesday, March 10: Library closed periods 1, 3, 4. Registration and classes in session.
• Wednesday, March 11: Library closed periods 2, 4. Registration and classes in session. Library also CLOSED after school.
• Thursday, March 12: Library closed 8:00AM-4:00PM for Eastshore Band Festival.
• Friday, March 13: Library closed periods 1, 2, 4, 6, 7. Registration and classes in session.
