ELL Teacher

All multilingual students registering in Washington State are screened with the ELPA21 (English Language Proficiency Assessment for the 21st Century) to determine if English Language Learner services should be provided. ELPA21 screening is scheduled when you register your student.

Elementary School Services

All Emerging, Progressing and Proficient ELLs are served by ELL-endorsed teachers and facilitators in their home schools. ELL support consists of:

ELL Facilitation K-5:

  • Provides inclusion supports for Emerging and Progressing ELLs by supporting the classroom teacher through:
    • Joint planning
    • Curriculum mapping and alignment
    • Co-developing instructional materials
    • Collaborative assessment of student work
    • Cycles of co-teaching
    • Using the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to scaffold language instruction
  • Organizes and supports state-required testing
  • Leads building-level professional development that is specific to language development
  • Develops appropriate English Language Learner (ELL) instructional strategies to support K-5 students in successfully meeting academic standards
  • Serves as a member of the core team of decision-making professionals in the school environment to advocate and support ELLs and their families
  • Organizes and involves families in school events
  • Serves as case manager for building ELLs
  • Short-term instructional intervention specific to language development

Middle and High School Services

ELL Facilitation 6-12:

  • Provides inclusion supports for Emerging and Progressing ELLs by supporting the classroom teacher through:
    • Joint planning
    • Curriculum mapping and alignment
    • Co-developing instructional materials
    • Collaborative assessment of student work
    • Cycles of co-teaching

Highland:

Emerging and Progressing Level ELL Students

  • ELL Language Arts courses organized by grade level
    • 6th, 7th and 8th grade ELL Language Arts – will be provided in a mixed classroom setting with an ELL Teacher providing support within the class in a co-taught model
  • ELL English support classes
    • Academic English Language Development 1 – 1 period
    • Academic English Language Development 2 – 1 period

Chinook, Odle, Tillicum & Tyee:

Emerging and Progressing Level ELL Students

  • ELL Language Arts courses organized by grade level
    • 6th grade ELL Language Arts – 1 period
    • 7th grade ELL Language Arts – 1 period
    • 8th grade ELL Language Arts – 1 period
  • ELL English support classes
    • Academic English Language Development 1 – 1 period
    • Academic English Language Development 2 – 1 period

Bellevue, Interlake, Sammamish & Newport:

Emerging and Progressing Level ELL Students

  • ELL Language Arts courses organized by grade level
    • 9th grade ELL Language Arts – Freshman Composition and Literature – 1 period
    • 10th grade ELL Language Arts – Sophomore Composition & Literature – 1 period
    • 11th / 12th grade ELL Language Arts – Junior / Senior American Literature – 1 period
  • ELL English support classes
    • Academic English Language Development 1 – 1 period
    • Academic English Language Development 2 – 1 period
