Somerset Families,

All borrowed classroom materials, district curriculum, library books or other items need to be returned to school preferably before Friday, June 18th so staff can take an accurate inventory.

Hybrid students can bring their materials to school during their learning session and virtual families can drop the items off at the school window between the hours of 9:15-3:15.  There will be no access for k-4th grade students on Wednesday afternoon (June 16th) due to the 5th grade promotion activities.

As we look toward to fall, Somerset will continue to provide most of your child’s basic school supplies.  School Supply list will be shared next week in our final Somerset Strong News, on our website, and through PTSA communications.

I am also aware that there are some questions regarding the health and safety protocols for next fall when we return to a more “normal” school learning environment.  As you know, the guidance from the health department and state change regularly.  You can plan on full day instruction for k-12 students with lunch and district transportation.  Ms. Naish and I will host a virtual parent “Back to School” session in mid to late August to provide the most up to date health and safety protocols and expectations for families.  An invite will be sent in early August.

I would encourage you to reflect with you child on all the things they have learned and accomplished this year.  It will be a year that is remembered for a long time.  How we remember it will depend on the stories we choose to share.  I think if we look, we will find some bright spots and silver linings.  My guess is one of the bright spots for your child is their teacher and the relationship that was developed over this year online (and for some in person).  Please consider sending a kind word expressing your appreciation to your child’s teacher and the impact they have made on your family this year.  Affirming words are an important part of being in partnership…which helps keep us Somerset Strong!

5th Grade Promotion Celebrations

Star GraduationThis year, we are pleased to announce that the following activities have been planned to celebrate our 5th graders’ promotion.

  1. Walk-by Promotion Ceremony – Wednesday, June 16th (assigned time by class between 1pm-3:45pm)

Students will gather by classroom at an assigned time in front of the school (details will follow in a separate class email). Your student’s classroom teacher will lead the class through a procession to receive his/her graduation certificate from the Principal at a station to be set up by the school’s front door. We kindly ask parents/guardians to remain at a designated area and refrain from approaching the Principal’s station to take pictures due to Covid safety measurements. We will have a professional photographer standing by to take a picture of each student with the Principal and teacher to capture this memorable moment for families. The promotion picture will be made available for download at no cost.

  1. Outdoor Carnival Celebration – Wednesday, June 16th (assigned time by class between 2pm-5pm)

Each class will move to the back of the school for an Outdoor Carnival Celebration. Before starting the carnival activities, parents/guardians will have the opportunity to take family pictures at a photo booth to be set up under the covered area of the playground. Following the photo session, students will participate with their class/cohort in planned fun activities on the field for 45 minutes. At the end of each class’ carnival session, each student will receive a Somerset promotion keepsake and an ice cream coupon. Students will be directed to an ice cream truck to receive their treats. We ask that families leave the school campus immediately after receiving and consuming their ice creams to avoid undue crowd gatherings.

  1. Virtual Promotion Ceremony on Teams – Monday, June 21st (6-7pm)

Parents, students, and extended family are welcome to join the virtual promotion ceremony on Monday, June 21st at 6pm. A link will be sent out to all families. Principal’s and teachers’ words of wisdom along with a slideshow of our 5th graders will be shown. You can also watch the recording of the event any time at your convenience.

Feel free to contact our 5th Grade Promotion Committee at with any questions or to volunteer to assist with the activity preparation.

Principal Birthday lunches – 12:30-1:00

Cupcake Birthday

June and July’s Birthday lunch celebration will be Wednesday the 16th at 12:00.   Students with a June or July birthday will receive a Teams invite through their student email accounts from Ruth Embaye, our office manager on the day prior.  If you don’t receive an invitation, please reach out to and she will send the link.  Each session includes an opportunity for students to share something exciting about birthdays, a quick art project and a short story.  It is a highlight for us to share this time celebrating students.  Please note we have moved the birthday lunch celebrations to Wednesday to ensure all students, both virtual and hybrid can attend.

Last Day of School for the 2020-2021 School Year

Elementary Virtual Students
The schedule for the last day of school for virtual elementary students will be their regular morning schedule.

Elementary In-Person Students
The schedule for the last day of school (Tuesday, June 22) for hybrid, in-person students will be the typical AM/PM schedule with House A students coming in the morning and House B coming in the afternoon. Transportation will run on the typical Tuesday schedule for the last day of school.

Since the last day of school is typically a shortened day for students so that teachers can complete year-end tasks in the afternoon before summer vacation starts, we will make the morning of Wednesday, June 16, an asynchronous learning morning so that teachers have the time they need to complete year-end tasks.

Technology: Student device updates for end of 2020-2021 school year

We are excited to announce that all K-12 students will be able to keep their district device this summer.  This ensures every student has an opportunity to continue to learn, connect, innovate, communicate, collaborate and so much more.

Reminders for using student devices over the summer:

  • The terms of the Technology Responsible Use Pledge still apply.
  • Students are responsible for the care of their device.
  • Devices will still have their web traffic filtered.
  • Students are responsible for bringing their device back on the first day of school.

If students have hardware issues at the end of the school year or over summer break, we highly encourage them to get their device fixed. This is to ensure they can start the first day of next school year with a fully functional device. Prior to returning to school in the fall, students will need to charge, turn on and connect to the district network via BSDVPN. This is to ensure student devices receive the necessary summer updates prior to the first day of school. If tech support is needed, students may email
