Spiritridge Families,

Welcome back from Winter Break. I hope you had a restful time with family and friends. This letter has detailed information on our expansion of in-person services for students in grades K-2. More communication will be coming the first week of January as well.

As a step toward returning our K-2 students full-time in-person, we are starting with a half-day schedule, with students assigned to either an AM or PM cohort. This step will allow us to refine our health and safety protocols while students are in smaller cohorts. It also enables us to avoid having students eating lunch with their masks off.

During the other half of the day, students will receive remote instruction from specialists, have time to complete adaptive software assignments such as Lexia and Freckle, and complete other asynchronous assignments and independent reading. We realize the half-day schedule may not be ideal for some families, but again this is just a step toward a full-day return.

Thank you to all K-2 families that completed the Return to School Survey. This has allowed us to begin planning for classes and logistics involved in opening school for a safe return.

Current Learning Schedules:

All teachers and students (Hybrid and Virtual) will continue with the current virtual learning schedule until their grade level students return to live instruction in school.
As of now we are only planning for K-2 students to return to school.

 Return to School Start Dates:

  • 21: 2nd graders back in school
  • 25: 1st graders back in school
  • 1: Kindergarteners back in school

Hybrid – Return to School schedule for K-2:
Once we start in-person services, K-2 hybrid teachers will shift to the new AM/PM schedule on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday – your child will attend in-person school for 2.5 hours in either the morning or afternoon.

Wednesdays will be remote learning for all students (synchronous and asynchronous).

Daily Schedule Mon, Tue, Thur, Fri:

  • Group A = 9:05-11:35

11:35-1:05 Transportation and Lunch

No lunch provided at school. Students will eat lunch at home.

  • Group B = 1:05-3:35

Wednesdays will be remote synchronous and asynchronous for students.

Virtual Schedules:
Virtual students and teachers will continue with the current virtual learning schedule.

AM/PM Student Assignments

Initial AM/PM student assignments have been created by last name to keep siblings together across grade levels. From there, school staff will finalize the cohorts. The AM/PM assignments will be provided to second grade families this week. Families may make requests to change assignments based on extenuating circumstances and space availability; please note that we may not be able to accommodate all requests to change and will prioritize those most essential. First grade and kindergarten cohort assignments will follow soon after.

Two Days for Teacher Prep:
In preparation for in-person learning, K-2 hybrid teachers will not hold synchronous classes on January 19-20. While teachers are getting things ready in their classrooms during this time, students will be given asynchronous work to accomplish. The asynchronous time includes an extension of what students learned during in-person instruction, as well as specialist times and adaptive software.

What is the timeline for reopening other grades?
District leaders, educators and staff have been working on planning for all grade levels. The district will share information through our regular communications channels when additional information is available.
We will include 3rd grade in the next phase after K-2.

The district has a full list of FAQs on their website, for additional information, visit: https://bsd405.org/BacktoBuildings.

Coming Soon: In the next week or so, I will be sharing other important information about in-person services including drop-off/pick-up information, safety protocols in place, health expectations for families and more!
