High School Summer Reading has changed:

  • High school students will no longer have required summer reading
  • Teachers will encourage students to read independently over the summer based on their own interests and to support their growth as readers
  • We encourage adults to take an active role in helping individual teens choose those books that are the best fit for them and their families

Studies show that reading for pleasure has a significant positive impact on academic performance. For example, research suggests that students who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better on reading assessments than those who do not, but they also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge, and a better understanding of diverse cultures.
