Principal’s Message:

We had an unplanned evacuation today.  The alarms sounded at approximately 12:50 PM (between 4th and 5th periods).  All students and staff were evacuated safely and accounted for in an efficient manner following our normal routines.  The Bellevue Fire Department responded, investigated the source of the alarm, and cleared us for reentry after approximately 20 minutes outside.  Please know that there was no fire nor any actual threat to safety.  The source of the alarm has been identified and is being addressed.  Unlike previous unplanned evacuations, the weather was on our side with patches of blue sky and sun.

Student safety is a top priority for us at Tillicum Middle School and we practice school-wide emergency drills monthly, including lock-down, evacuation, drop-cover-hold, and shelter-in-place, to practice how to respond to actual emergencies.  This unexpected event allowed us to see our well-practiced safety procedures in action.

School News:

Musical Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Tillicum 8th grade Band, the Advanced Choir and the Advanced Orchestra for their Superior Ratings  on their  performances at the Bellevue School District Middle School  Music Festivals last Friday March 30th.  Many weeks of detailed team work, outside of school practice time and strong student leadership helped  us to achieve such a high level of musical performance. Thanks for all your hard work Musical Tigers!!!

And  a GREAT BIG  Thank you to all of parent volunteers who help with these  fieldtrips.

 

Escribo en Español

7 out of the 8 awards granted in the Contest “Escribo en Español”, organized by the Consulate of Spain, Center of Spanish Studies, were won by Tillicum students! Let’s celebrate and congratulate them:

In the non- native section we congratulate:

  • 1st prize for Marit W, 8º grade.
  • 2nd prize for Kenzie C, 6º grade.
  • 3rd prize for Alexandria P, 8º grade.
  • Honorable mention for Indigo Z, 8ºgrade.

 

In the native section we congratulate:

  • 2nd prize for Maximiliano G, 7ºgrade.
  • 3rd prize for Natalia L, 8º grade.

 

6th Grade Camp

Attention 6th Grade Parents!  Did you miss the March 9 deadline to turn in your camp paperwork?  Don’t worry – it’s not too late!  Students can still turn in their paperwork to their social studies teachers next week.

Tuition this year is $170 per student.  Payment can be made all at once, either online or at the school office with a check or credit card.  A Financial Payment Plan is available, as are scholarships.

The Parent Authorization and Acknowledgement for Out of State or Overnight Field Trip should be signed and returned to school by March 9.

If a student will need medication at camp, including any over-the-counter meds, we must have a Med Authorization to administer.  Please bring in the completed form and any medication before the first day of camp, and contact Nurse Peggy Ruehr for questions:  425-456-6714

Library Update

YRCA 2018 is happening now! In Tillicum TIGER fashion, we will have our own voting period and celebration to select TILLICUM’S favorite YRCA book! You will have to read at least 3 of the nominated books to be eligible to vote.

ASB news:

Tiger Socks for Sale!

Tillicum’s ASB and the Strideline sock company worked together to create a specialized Tillicum Tiger sock! The socks are in and now available for purchase for $25. Students may bring their money directly to the office, or they may pay online. Receipts for online purchases should be given to the office in exchange for socks. NJHS News

National Jr. Honor Society applications are now being accepted for the 2018-19 school year.  The deadline is Friday April 20, 2018 at 3:00 pm (no exceptions).  The application packets are available in the main office, or can be found on the NJHS website.

 

Jubilee News

The Spring Season will begin on April 16, 2018. We will be offering; Math Team, Girls Golf, Girls & Boys Soccer and Boys & Girls Basketball. If students are interested in participating, please have them register online at jubileereach. If students are already registered with Jubilee REACH, please have them notify (In-person or through email) the Site Coaches and what they would like to participate in.

We are also in need of volunteer coaches to help out with our sports programs. If you would like to volunteer your time or know of anyone that may want to volunteer their time, please email the Site Coach, Robert Raban or the Assistant Site Coach, Shaler Knowles for more information. It is a great way for high school students to gain volunteer hours and build bridges for the middle school students and to get to know future classmates.

Open Positions include: President, Treasurer, Secretary, and VPs of Communications, Volunteers, and Teacher Relations.

To be eligible for election to any of the above positions, candidates must be the parent of a student at Tillicum next year, and have been a member of any PTA at least 30 days prior to being elected.

If you, or someone you know, would be a good fit, please let us know.  We are seeking to nominate a board representing all our feeder schools, programs, and grade levels.  Positions can be shared if you would like to team up with another parent.

Box Tops collection continues!

So far this year we have collected $216 worth!

Please keep turning in your little pink Box Top squares.  You will find them on a variety of products you use in your home or office!

Every little bit adds up.  No need to create a large pile before submission – have your student bring in what you have collected to the “Box Tops” box – located in the front office.

Please note:  we no longer collect Labels for Education – a separate program that was discontinued at the end of 2017.

How to Report a Safety Concern

Bullying and safety concerns can always be reported to any staff member at your school. The Bellevue School District also utilizes an anonymous reporting tool called SafeSchools Alert through which anyone can make a verbal or written report of harassment, intimidation or bullying, contact a school administrator or any staff member.

Information on how to submit a report via any of these methods is available on the district website at www.bsd405.org/help/report.

Backpacks and School Supplies 2018

Grades 7-12* Only incoming 9th and 11th Graders will receive Backpacks

Will you need school supplies next year? If you qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch, you may be eligible to receive these free supplies.  Congregations for Kids, a group of Bellevue congregations and area organizations, are donating these backpacks and supplies.

To apply, please contact Tillicum Counselor M.P. Ankerson (ankersonm@bsd405.org)  on or before 5/4/18. You must sign up now and will not be allowed to request the supplies in August.

Backpacks and school supplies will be picked up at the school where you attend in August 2018. Please look for information at your school regarding the pickup dates in late August.

Submissions Welcome

We work to ensure that the news we share here is relevant for students and families, and we welcome news from families and the many individuals, clubs, teams, and organizations that support our school community. Please provide submissions directly to our Main Office.

Student Awards

Want the district to showcase your student’s achievements on the district webpage and in this newsletter?  Submit information about awards your student has earned to the district’s Communications office!  Simply write one to two paragraphs answering who, what, when, where and why about your student’s accomplishment.  If possible, include a photo of your student to be posted with the story.  Send award submissions to communityrelations@bsd405.org.

Lost & Found! 

The box in the main office is currently overflowing with jackets, hats, shoes, water bottles, lunch boxes & other miscellaneous items.  Please stop by to look through the pile & claim what belongs to your student. Note:  if an item has a student’s name on it, we make sure it is delivered directly to that person.

Lost & found items are donated at the end of each month.

Check Grades Online Weekly

Wondering how your student is doing in classes?  Be sure to check grades online.  Grades are updated regularly by teachers and our expectation is that parents are checking progress weekly via the online grade portal. With teachers seeing 140+ students each day the reality is that teachers are unable to provide individual updates on assignments and test scores, and the online grade viewer is our primary method for communicating this information.  More information about grade checking can be found online at:  http://www.bsd405.org/departments/district-technology/grades-attendance/
