Tillicum Times

November 27,  2023

Dear Tillicum Families,

I trust you enjoyed the long Thanksgiving holiday. I certainly did!

As part of our schoolwide effort to teach, model and reinforce the executive function skill of organization, Tillicum provided each student with a spiral bound planner in September. Now, just past the quarter point in the school year, we are working to assess the efficacy of our efforts.  Toward this end, we are asking students and staff for their input during a modified schedule on Tuesday.  Teachers will provide a mini lesson on organization, conduct planner a planner check and students will complete a reflective survey and watch a TED Talk on Organization and Procrastination.

As for families, I am requesting that you provide your feedback via this brief 2 minute Planner Check Survey for Tillicum Families.

Holiday Gifts. Every year when the holidays approach, we see grateful and thoughtful parents and community members who want to find ways to express their appreciation to our teachers and other employees for their work by giving gifts to the individuals they know in the school house. Often parents, especially if their work experience has been in the private sector, are not aware that gifts to publicly-paid employees are discouraged by school board policy. Therefore, we ask that if you would like to give a gift to a staff member this holiday season, the value of the gift should not be elaborate or unduly expensive as outlined in Bellevue School Board Policy 5255.  Cards or small remembrances may be given to the teacher or mailed to Tillicum Middle School 1280 160th Ave SE Bellevue 98008.

If you wish to provide more than a small token of gratitude to an individual teacher or staff member, you can make donations to a specific classroom, donate to Tillicum Middle School or a specific program within our school, and/or make a contribution to the Tillicum PTA , the Bellevue Schools Foundation, or other charity in recognition of a teacher’s work. If you should have any questions about the above mentioned policy or need to brainstorm ideas for how to honor an individual teacher, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Thank you!

Previous Announcements

Pre-Arranged School Absences.  As holidays and school breaks are fast approaching, we want to provide a reminder and guidance to families scheduling plans and travel about pre-arranging absences with our Attendance Office. Bellevue School District provides students with 5 pre-arranged absence days per school year.  These are excused and can be used for family events, travel, extracurricular events,  private school tours, etc.  Days beyond the 5-day limit are marked as “unexcused”. Unexcused absences may impact students from receiving credit for missed coursework or exams.

Please complete the pre-arranged absence form prior to the absence for it to be excused.  Students must obtain teacher and parent signatures.  After they get all teacher signatures, your student will need to turn the completed form in to the attendance office.   This form should be submitted to the attendance office at least 3 days before the planned absence so we have time to process it.  You can find more information about pre-arranged absences on this page:  https://bsd405.org/tillicum/report-an-absence.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
