Tyee: Curriculum Night (October 1)

Next Thursday, October 1st, Tyee will host it’s first ever virtual Curriculum Night! The live event general session will be from 6:00-6:30pm, featuring an overview of the school and programs, and instructions on how to access video presentations from your child’s Teachers. A recording of the live event will be made available the following day.

Schools across BSD shifted to a pre-recorded delivery model, so families can watch teacher presentations from their homes, at times convenient to them. Teachers will also provide families with ways to contact them with questions so they are responsive to family needs. Instructions on how to access your child’s teachers videos will be sent out in next week’s newsletter!

Tyee: Class Sizes & Adjustments

Tyee is growing, and for several straight years we have more students enrolled than we did the year before. Due to several late enrollments at the end of summer, we need to adjust our class sizes and reduce the largest class sections, some which are near 40 students. Research shows benefits in smaller class sizes, maximizing teacher and student contact time and opportunities for 1:1 support. The opportunity for families and students to select Hybrid or 100% Virtual models presented some challenges in offering enough required and elective courses throughout the 7-period day, as students must maintain schedules entirely within their model.  In the very rare cases we are unable to place a Tyee student enrolled in the Virtual model into a needed class at Tyee, we find space in a virtual class taught by Odle Middle School staff.

When changes occur in student schedules, teacher assignments, or course offerings, this is communicated to families, students, and staff. We are thankful that unlike last September, where we had to change 150+ student schedules during the third week of school, adjustments this year will have less school-wide impact, and students can settle into classes and relationships with teachers. We anticipate changes will finalize this week.

We recognize individual changes still impact the affected student, and this is often disappointing. We apologize for disruption and remain hopeful that by reducing class sizes, your child gets the best possible learning experience, and their individual needs can be met by increasing access to their Teacher.

Tyee: Attendance Updates We appreciate you all helping your students attend their live classes every morning, including checking for work and updates in their class Teams on Wednesdays.   Attendance is taken daily.   Also, if you are checking attendance in ParentVue and you see a green check mark, that means your student DID NOT attend class.  You can click the green circle to see details of the absence.  Currently all “RLAs” (Remote Learning Absence) codes are excused. Unexcused absences will begin being recorded after October 1 and we will require a parent or staff e-mail/note to excuse them.  If you have questions,  please feel free to email us: [email protected]
Tyee: STAR (Reading & Math) Assessments Just a reminder that the window for STAR Reading & Math assessment will continue this week in Language Arts & Math classes.  Please see the attached letters (in Spanish , Chinese , and English ) explaining the STAR assessment.
