Good Evening Tyee Community,

We hope you are well. Our Teachers were very excited to start a new week with your students and we hope everyone begins settling into some learning routines while we continue in the remote setting. Below are some announcements for our first 5-day week of the school year!

-Byron Lillie, Principal

Attendance: General Updates

We appreciate families helping your students attend their live classes every morning, including checking for work and updates in their class Teams on Wednesdays.   Attendance is taken daily.   Also, if you are checking attendance in ParentVue and you see a green check mark, that means your student DID NOT attend class.  You can click the green circle to see details of the absence.

Currently all “RLAs” (Remote Learning Absence) codes are excused. Unexcused absences will begin being recorded after October 1 and we will require a parent or staff e-mail/note to excuse them.  If you have questions,  please feel free to email us: [email protected]

Attendance: Wednesdays

While we don’t host live Teams Meetings on Wednesdays, it does not mean that school is “optional” for students this day 🙂 We do take attendance each Wednesday, and expect students engage in scheduled classwork for the day from their teachers.

Schools are required to report attendance for every school day. Students are to work independently or check in with teachers or small groups, similar to our afternoon periods the other 4 days of the week. Attendance is reported based on student activity in Teams during the morning. Teachers will report attendance by 4:00pm.

This Wednesday (September 16th), the following asynchronous periods are scheduled:

  1. 8:30-9:10 – 5th period
  2. 9:15-9:55 – 6th period
  3. 10:00-10:40 – 7th period
  4. 10:45-11:25 – Community (Back to School Assembly!)

There are 3 ways a student can best ensure they are marked as “present” for attendance in 5th, 6th, and 7th periods. Students can:

  1. Open assignments in the Class Team
  2. View channels in Teams
  3. Reply to Posts in Teams

Students should not e-mail the Teacher directly, but by logging into Teams, the Teacher will see the student was active.  If there are any errors, students/families can e-mail [email protected]

Upcoming Information about Math and Reading Screeners In the next two weeks, your student will be taking math and reading assessments remotely.  The purpose for the assessments is to gather information on student strengths and areas that they may need additional support.  The data gathered will not be used to determine placement in Advanced Learning program but will help teachers in their planning.  Language Arts and Math teachers will be contacting students on when they will be taking the assessments.  We have included more details in the attached letters about the assessment tools used. Click Here
Back to School (Virtual) Assembly! This Wednesday, September 16th Tyee will host our annual “Back to School” Assembly. This event will be hosted by our Tyee ASB Officers live over Microsoft Teams from 10:45-11:25am. We will introduce our Officers, some key staff members, and how to join Clubs & Activities while we’re in a Temporary Remote setting. Students were sent the link in their Outlook e-mails on Monday. Encourage your students to watch!
Student Planners As students are learning to organize a complex schedule with 7 different classes, our teachers stress the use of common tools, like a weekly planner. Many students picked up paper copies, but if your student is making some digital shifts, encourage the use of this attached fillable PDF format (click here) .  There is also a new link for parents/guardians to watch the introduction video, because the original was only viewable with a BSD account.
Tech Assistance

In-Person: BSD has shifted “tech centers” to central locations. Tyee students needing in-person assistance should visit the Tech Center @ Newport High School (4333 Factoria Blvd). Open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8am-3pm; and Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10am-5pm.

E-mail: Students ([email protected]); Parents/Guardians ([email protected])

Phone: 425.456.4321

Breakfast & Lunch is served!

Waivers are extended allowing BSD to offer meals to children in our community for FREE.   This will run through December 31. Families are welcome at any location, parents/guardians may pick up for their child. Meals provided to any child, they don’t have to be in BSD schools. Unhealthy Air Quality

A message from Tyee Nurse, Alexa Wehmeyer, BSN, RN:  Today’s air quality is considered unhealthy due to smoke from fires across the state. Below are a few tips to limit your exposure and to stay healthy:

LIMIT your exposure :

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Avoid exercising outdoors.
  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Avoid vacuuming (as it moves particles around inside).
  • Avoid smoking.

OTHER considerations:

  • Paper/dust masks do NOT protect your lungs from the smaller particles found in wildfire smoke.
  • If you have been prescribed an albuterol inhaler for a lung condition, consider using it as prescribed for any symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, wheezing as examples).
  • Increase your fluids by drinking more water.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
