BSD/Tyee: Grading Changes

An e-mail communication went out to all district families about changes for Secondary (grades 6-12) classes.  Please note that Tyee offers both middle level courses and credit-bearing (high school level) courses.

For Secondary Credit-Bearing courses (a list of these at Tyee is below):

  • Grading Scale: No changes
  • “F” Grades: All “F” grades will be replaced with “NC” (no credit)
  • “P” Grade Option: Students may opt for a “P” designation to replace any passing grade (A-D)
    • Process for making this request is coming soon!

For middle level courses (Non-credit-bearing):

  • Grading Scale: No Changes
  • “F” Grades: All “F” grades will be replaced with “NE” (not sufficient evidence)

Frequently Asked Questions

Which courses are “credit-bearing” at Tyee?

  • ONLY the following: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Spanish 1B, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, French 1B, French 2, Chinese 1B, Chinese 2, Advanced Learning Human Geography (gr. 8), Advanced Learning Biology (gr. 8), Advanced Learning Literature & Composition (gr. 8)

Can I request a “P” for a passing grade for a middle level course?

  • No, the option for a “P” is only for credit-bearing (listed above) courses.

How do I request a “P” for a credit-bearing course my student earned an A, B, C, or D in?

  • A process is forthcoming. It will be a website available in several languages. Students/Families will identify which courses they’d like to request the change for.
  • For first semester, students/families must submit the change request no later than 5:00pm (PST) on Monday, February 8 2021.

What is the impact of a “NE”, “NC”, or “P” grade?

  • NE – unrelated to credit, and will not be calculated into the GPA.
  • NC – will not earn credit and will not be calculated into the GPA.
  • P – will earn credit, but will not be calculated into the GPA.

Will “NC” or “P” grades post to the High School Transcript when my student begins 9th grade?

  • Yes, however there are processes in place for students to have these marks removed during their high school years. Students/Families may not have these removed prior to the beginniing of 9th grade.
Tyee: Picture Days

Don’t forget to come tomorrow for your pictures! If you signed for a Wednesday slot and no longer plan to come, please make sure to cancel your sign up so that other families can sign up. The makeup day for pictures is planned for March. If you have questions, please email Michelle Steinberg ([email protected]) or Betty Nhan ([email protected]) .

These pictures will provide families the opportunity to order these mementos as well as serve as the picture for the yearbook. For those families who are unable to attend or choose not to participate in this in-person activity, the yearbook staff is setting up an alternate process to ensure that all students have the ability to be represented in the yearbook.

Dates and Hours: Wednesday, January 20, 12:00pm – 4:30pm

Location: Tyee Middle School (under the covered basketball area outside)

We thank you in advance for following these safety protocols:

  • This will be an outside event.  Dress for the weather.
  • Only students will be able to exit the car and go to the picture-taking area. No family members will be allowed to accompany students. We will ask you to stay in your parked car, or if walking, away from the photography area.
  • All students and staff will be masked at all times—except for the short time that the student removes the mask to take a picture.
  • Physical distancing will be required.

Tyee: BSD Laptops Required During Classes

Families, it is required students use their BSD-issued laptop devices during all morning (synchronous) class sessions.  Our teachers and staff will be relaying similar expectations to students, and we really appreciate you reiterating this to students when they are working remotely.

We recognize the ease and convenience for students to use private devices for independent time or homework, but when students are on BSD devices we can monitor student engagement (via Class Policy). We are also learning that when Microsoft Teams releases new updates to our network devices, some functionality is limited and students are missing out on learning opportunities when using private devices.  Please instruct students to use their BSD laptops during live class sessions.  Thank you!

  • Helps grow music and arts programs
  • Stocks school libraries with digital and classroom books in multiple languages to serve our global population
  • Nurtures our students’ social and emotional development through our mental health initiative which identifies students struggling with mental health issues and gets them the support they need.
