Dear Wilburton Families and Parents,

We are approaching our rainy season and colder weather.  Please remember to send your student to school in warm clothing or appropriate wear for the rainy/cold season.  Due to social distancing measures, we will continue to keep students outdoors during recesses.  We have limited areas that are covered, so it is possible that students will play in the rain.

We want to thank our family community for your patience and flexibility with our arrival and dismissal process, we continue to observe and analyze how things are going to make ongoing changes and we appreciate the feedback we have been receiving.

In partnership,

Chhoun Mey

Stephanie Mathias

Dear Wilburton Families and Parents,

Our staff and I are extremely excited to start this school year by welcoming back our students to a full day of learning. Just as important, we also know that with the continue rise of COVID-19 infection rate, particularly among kids, we know that there is some apprehension around sending back students to a full day of school that also includes partaking in lunch. Our staff have been busy putting together a school safety plan that includes mitigating measures to prioritize the safety of all our students, families, and staff members.

Please do reach out to me, Stephanie or other staff members with any questions or concerns you might have.

In Partnership,

Chhoun Mey

Wilburton is truly a global community. For many of us, most of our family and loved ones are living in another country. In the United States, the daily infection rates from COVID-19 are starting to decrease while the vaccination rates are increasing. We want to acknowledge that this isn’t the case in all countries. Currently, India is experiencing a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases. India has reported record setting numbers in the last week. There is an extreme shortage of hospital beds and oxygen. We know there are staff members and families who have loved ones in other countries experiencing spikes including India, Brazil and Mexico. We understand that many of you currently have loved ones who are currently sick, or who have recently passed from COVID-19, and the stress is even higher with the uncertainty of medical care. The distance amplifies the situation. Please know that the Wilburton staff is ready to support your family and your student(s). Please contact your child’s teacher, your child’s counselor, an administrator if you need assistance. We can connect you with community resources and provided direct support for student(s) in school.

What’s Happening at Wilburton?

 FAMILY MUSIC NIGHTS

Dear Families-

I am so happy to share with you that I will be hosting a series of “Family Music Nights”. These are optional opportunities for students to share, perform, and even teach their families what they have been learning in music class.

Family Music Nights will be online, over the computer and students will have the meetings sent to their Teams Calendars.

Time and Date Tuesday, May 18th Wednesday, May 19th Thursday, May 20
6:00-6:30 pm   Morgan, Bush, Radics Lozan, Le
6:45-7:15 pm Sin, Nolan Ackerman, Lee Atkins, Marcoe
7:30- 8:00pm Dhoot, Isernio, Vegarra Bassani, Bell, Kim Poon (Florio), Nova

What will this look like or sound like?

·         This will feel a lot like music class, but families will be listen, watch and even participate in the songs or dances and the students will be the teachers for them!

Do students who participate need to have their video cameras and microphones on?

·         No. This is meant to be for families and students to share and experience together as a small group. Audio will be from my computer songs or voice, and your child’s voice right there with you. If students want to have their video cameras on to share with the larger group there will be opportunities for that during our dance and movement portion.

Please email or send me a TEAMS message if you have any questions

Sincerely,

Stephanie Hazen, Music Specialist

Dear Wilburton Community,

At Wilburton we are committed to our Wilburton Family.  A community group that accepts all, and embraces each person’s identity, including race and culture, that make each of us special. We are all important.  We, as a collective group, can make a difference in our world now and for the future.

We, at Wilburton, are committed to racial equity and inclusion of all in our community and world around us.  As administrators, we know we have an amazing staff in our building that love unconditionally and care deeply about each student and family at Wilburton.

This coming week is Black Lives Matter at School across the nation.  This is a week of action that focuses on affirming all black identities by centering black voices, empowering students, and teaching about black experiences beyond slavery.   Our teachers have been provided resources that they may use this week to emphasize social justice and ethnic studies.  Being intentional about recognizing and affirming our students’ identities is paramount to their sense of belonging, feeling welcomed, and an important part of our family. These lessons and learning that focuses on black identities not only benefit our black students but can also be transformative for our nonblack students.  The resource,  BLM AT SCHOOL – Home (blacklivesmatteratschool.com),  is a great resource teachers may be using and can be used by you and your family at home, too, if you wish.

Teachers have been provided resources and will use their professional judgement as to the level of use, engagement, and depth of learning for their unique classrooms, ensuring the content is delivered in an inclusive, supportive, and developmentally appropriate way.  For example, in kindergarten, students may discuss, “what makes each of us unique and different from one another?” and creating an “all about me! Poster that shares things about themselves that show how they are unique.”  Or maybe in 3rd grade the students might learn and talk about “hurtful words”, teasing, or exclusionary behaviors and how they can be more inclusive and kinder to each other.  And finally, maybe a 5th grade class will analyze, discussion, and understand how families are portrayed in media (TV shows, etc.) and compare/contrast that with their own lives.

The theme this year for Black Lives Matter Week is:  a Week of Action. A Year of Purpose. A Lifetime of Practice.  We invite you to join us in listening, learning, and sharing as part of our family.

#WeAreFamily,

Beth and Stephanie

Happy New Year Wilburton Wolves!  I hope that this winter break you have found joy in being with family and friends while staying safe and healthy.

I want to thank all our K-2 families for filling out the Survey for Return to In Person Learning.  Currently we are analyzing that information and making out class lists and AM/PM sessions for students.  More information will be shared with our K-2 Families in a separate email soon!

As we gear up to start school on Monday, please make sure to check the general channel of your students TEAM for their classroom and also their calendar for the newest schedule for specialists (Art, Music, PE, Library).  Across our district we have made changes to our specialists schedules, increasing their time to between 30-40 minutes, which means the schedule needed to change.  Specialists (Art, Music, PE, Library) are now scheduled throughout the day (between 8-2:30pm).  Your classroom teacher will remind students/families of this change and the specialists have created new meeting times and calendar invites for the classes.

Happy New Year All!

December is here!  Whoa, how did that happen?! I can honestly say that 2020 has gone fast and slow all at the same time. And, I am also looking forward to the new year!  As we finish out 2020 with these last three weeks of school before winter break, we will continue to partner together to support each of our wolves here at Wilburton – that means wolf staff, students, and families!  I feel so fortunate to have each of our Wilburton wolves here as part of our family to partner with in times like these!  The resilience, innovation, flexibility, challenges, and teamwork is commendable for ALL! We have had our bumps along the way (and no doubt we will continue to have them!) but the more and more we communicate and partner together, the more successful we all are!  THANK YOU for being our partners throughout the years and especially in 2020!  I am thankful and grateful for our Wilburton family!

Hi everyone!  I hope you are enjoying your weekend and especially that extra hour from “fall back!”  Along with the crisp mornings and autumn colors, one-hour extra sleep is top on my favorites of fall list!  Yesterday I took a walk and time to see and enjoy the fall colors.  OH My!  What a beautiful place we live in.  With the sunshine forecasted to be back today,  I hope you can get out and enjoy it, too!

Our specialists are ready to get started with their afternoon clubs for our students!  As we shared from the start, there are limited spaces and if necessary, would be a lottery drawing for attendance.  Thank you for the huge response to the first round of Wilburton After-School and Lunch Clubs!  If you signed up your child to take part in a club, please check your child’s email and Teams for information on acceptance to clubs. If your child did not get into the club of their choice be on the look-out for more club opportunities sometime in the new year.

Wilbur, our Wilburton Wolf, misses our students in person!  Please see the attached for a few fun activities with Wilbur that your child may enjoy! if your child completes one, I would love to see it!  maybe it will be featured on our website or newsletter.  Send a picture of it to me via email at hamiltonel@bsd405.org!
