Good Evening Tyee Families,

This is it! The last full week of summer. Hope you and your students are taking in these last precious moments, but we at Tyee are excited to welcome your students in for another great school year beginning September 5th. Below is another edition of our weekly update, but as the week progresses please keep a close eye on your e-mail and our school website as more specific information about the start of the year is made available.

Several new families and students joined us for our Open House event on August 24th. It was lovely hosting you! If you could not attend, and would like to review the presentation, it is attached to this email.

Sincerely,

Byron Lillie, Principal

August 31: Tyee Open House Make-Up For new students and families unable to attend the August 24 event, Tyee will open to new families and students Thursday, August 31st from 4:00-5:30. We will have locker assignments for new 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students available, but please note there will not be any program or presentation, and minimal staff on-site to assist with questions.

Student Class Schedules Normal BSD Synergy ParentVue & StudentVue access is available in preparation for the new school year.  As a precaution, please be aware that any schedule shown in Synergy or any other application for the 2023-24 school year should still be considered a DRAFT. Often summer enrollment changes require adjusting class sizes and increasing course offerings.

Student schedules for the first day of school (September 5) will be finalized September 1. This is to ensure there are no late changes over the Labor Day weekend. If necessary, further corrections to student schedules would take place after the start of the year, and those changes would be communicated to affected classes or individual students and families.

Thank you for bearing with us and remaining patient as our administration and staff set the schedules for the best possible student learning experience in 2023-24!

Not Returning to Tyee? If your student will NOT be attending Tyee Middle School in the coming year, you must withdraw your student. Please e-mail [email protected] (please provide student name, and identification or date of birth).

October 2: Tyee Curriculum Night SAVE THE DATE. Tyee MS is excited to host our annual Curriculum Night. Please join us Monday, October 2 for an evening of presentations from your students’ teachers, and learn more about the courses they’ll experience together. Doors will open at 5:30pm.  A full schedule of events will be sent in the weeks leading up.
Lockers & Combination Locks All 6-8 grade students will be issued a hallway locker in the 2023-24 school year and will be required to store backpacks throughout the day. Students will still be permitted to carry small purses, fanny packs, shoulder/crossbody bags, or drawstring bags to carry valuables or health/hygiene products. Hallway lockers come with a combination spinner installed. Students in Physical Education (PE) courses will be issued a detachable combination lock & locker to safely store belongings after changing clothes.

6th grade students and new 7th/8th grade students can pick up hallway lockers and combination assignments at the August 24th Open House. Returning 7th and 8th grade students (and anyone who missed Open House) should pick up assignments the first days of school during lunch. If a student is unable to access their locker, they will be able to obtain a new one. PE locks are issued directly to students during classes the second week of school.

Combination locks are a new (and sometimes stressful!) skill to master. To prepare for the new year, we recommend viewing a brief instructional video like the one below with your student before school starts. Below is one sample and there are many more on YouTube. If you or a family member has a spare combination lock lying around, it’s also advisable your student get some hands-on practice too! Tutorial Video: How to Open a Combination Lock or Locker
