April 15, 2024 – NHE Community Newsletter
Message from Admin Team
Welcome back from Spring Break! As we return to our routines, we want to take a moment to express our appreciation for your continued support and engagement in our school community.
We are incredibly proud of the teaching and learning happening in our classrooms every day. Our dedicated teachers and staff work tirelessly to create engaging and enriching educational experiences for our students, and it has been truly inspiring to be able to witness this on a daily basis.
We are also really thankful for our ongoing partnership with the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA). The PTA plays a crucial role in supporting our school, and we are just so grateful for their dedication to enhancing the educational experience of our students. PTA will be organizing various events throughout the coming months to show appreciation for our hardworking staff and to provide opportunities for families to come together and celebrate our community. If you want to learn more about how you can support our PTA, please see the section below from our PTA.
As we dive back into the remainder of the school year, let us continue to work together to support the success and well-being of our students and staff.
Thank you for your unwavering support!
T&L
Every week it is exciting to see the learning happening around Newport Heights! The week before Spring Break, there was a lot of excitement for some kindergartners as they worked alongside their parents to put together Lego science projects. Not only did they get to select a fun object to create, such as a Ferris wheel or seesaw, but they also then used simple coding to make their project move. As with any learning experience, there was some trial and error, learning from mistakes, and experiencing success along the way. Thank you to those parents who were able to support students’ learning by modeling what it means to collaborate, problem solve, and complete a project.
Counselor’s Corner
The importance of school attendance
I highly recommend this episode from The Daily (a NY Times podcast). The reporter talks about the importance of school attendance and why it’s been in decline since the pandemic. They also identify a correlation between attendance and behaviors. Please help us by bringing your child(ren) to school every day if possible.

April is National Bilingual/Multilingual Learner Advocacy Month. Below are articles from WIDA and NPR highlighting the advantages of multilingualism. As we prepare to launch the Korean bilingual program in the upcoming school year, it might be a good time to recognize how multilingualism can enrich our students’ lives and enhance their ability to learn.
The NHE community values and supports every student’s linguistic ability.

6 Potential Brain Benefits Of Bilingual Education
Kids are showing reading gains in dual-language classrooms. There may be underlying brain advantages at work.
Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA)
There are only 9 full weeks of school remaining and our students in 3rd-5th grade will be taking the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) in English Language Arts and math. Fifth grade students have an additional science assessment. State testing does not need to be stressful – it can be seen as an opportunity to show how much our students grow each year! And our students know so much! You can encourage your child and decrease their stress by talking together about how much they have learned and grown this year.
Planning for Next School Year
Each year in late April, our office staff sends a Form’s survey for families to provide us information regarding their plans for the upcoming school year to better help us assign students to classroom and align our staffing allocation. This is an internal school survey to help our team proactively plan. Students currently enrolled will automatically transition into their next year’s classroom. There is no additional paperwork or forms needed for that to happen. This survey lets us know that your plan is to return so we place your child in a classroom, not returning so we remove them prior to making classroom assignments, unsure of your plans (we will assign them to a classroom, until we hear back from you). We recognize that family plans can change over the summer but we try our best to get the most accurate information in June because so much planning takes places during July and August. In case you have not completed the survey, please find the link to it below:
