Good Afternoon Tyee Community,

Hopefully the time change Sunday morning didn’t throw you or your student off too much to start the new week! It’s hard to believe we are winding down to our final week of Quarter 1 of our Academic School Year. Hope you all are staying healthy and safe.

A note regarding this week:

In anticipation of tomorrow’s local and national elections, we know that some students are experiencing stress. Many adults are feeling stress, too.

At Tyee, our purpose is to empower students academically, socially, and emotionally in a welcoming, equitable, and safe environment, so they can grow as critical thinkers, problem solvers, and responsible members of local and global communities. We believe that engaging with current events is an important part of that purpose. Tyee educators believe that controversial issues can spark intellectual curiosity and are thus an important part of a classroom environment. To support educators, we provided teachers with guidance and resources for how to navigate conversations about elections should it come up, and how to help students develop critical thinking skills and their own ideas.  We are also reiterating our commitment to a safe and civil educational environment for students, employees, parents/guardians, and community members free from harassment, intimidation, or bullying.

Veterans Day 2020

This year we are conducting assemblies and plan to honor different members of our community in ways that we have never done before! Please take the time to read how we can submit some different material below (or by looking at the document that is attached) so that we can hear the stories of Veterans that are a part of our community and so that we can share our gratitude with the people that have served our community and our country!

Tyee Middle School is searching for stories and photographs from veterans who are connected to our Tyee Learning Community! Do you have a family member or close family friend who has served in the United States Military? Would they be interested in sharing their story or photo with our Tyee Community?

We are looking for Veterans to record a short video clip and/or submit a photo for our middle school assembly that will be shared on Tuesday November 10th during 8th Period Synchronous time (11:30am).

Guideline for Photo Submission:

  • With the photo, please include the following: Name of the Veteran,  What military branch they served in,  Where they were stationed, and  What service means to them!
  • Please submit photos by Tuesday, November 3. To Submit Photos please send them to[email protected]

Guideline for Video Submission:

  • To Submit videos please give your Veteran this Flipgrid link:  https://flipgrid.com/901ee8d6 and ask them to create a submission or help them to do it!
  • You’ll need to be logged in through a Microsoft or Google e-mail!
  • In the video, please include the following: When did they serve? What branch of the military and where were they stationed?
  • Options to talk about: What did they learn from the military? What does service mean to them? Anything else they would like to share that relates to Veterans Day.
  • Please submit videos to Flipgrid by Tuesday, November 3.

If you are a student or staff member that would like to submit a message of gratitude and what it means to you that other people are willing to serve our country, please submit a message by email to[email protected]or with a video at the following Flipgrid link:https://flipgrid.com/c0a12d2d.

Technical Difficulties: What to do when Teachers can’t get online!

With rough weather ahead, we should plan for instances where a Teacher loses internet access, and cannot get to their class. When this happens, please follow the guidance below:

Teachers Will:

  • Notify Office Staff of the issue via phone or e-mail (if possible) and continue to try to re-establish contact during the period.
  • E-mail students via Outlook (if possible)
  • Provide flexibility and extension to students in the next class session or asynchronous times.

Office Staff Will:

  • E-mail the students affected, so they are aware of the issue.

Students Should:

  • Remain patient and online in the meeting (if already in), but may complete work for other classes while they wait.
  • Check Outlook e-mail for updates from office staff of the Teachers’ status.
  • Students should only “leave” class if they receive a message from the office confirming the Teacher will not arrive at all.

New to Tyee 7th & 8th Graders: Community Event  (Wednesday, November 4th)

The counseling team would like to build some community between our new students, so we are hosting an event for new 7th and 8th grade students on November 4th at 12:00 p.m. The idea is that the students would get a chance to hear some brief information from the counseling team and then split into break out groups, where students have the opportunity to play games and get to know each other.  This event is for students only and we would love for you to attend.  Please fill out this forms survey below as soon as possible to let us know if you plan to attend and if you have any questions that we can address with the whole group.
