Tyee: Gift Card Drive 12/4-15 The Tyee MS PTSA & Tyee MS are hosting a gift card drive this year from December 4-15. We have several families in our community in need of support with winter and holiday assistance. In the past, students and families have benefitted the most from local and online businesses, such as Target, Old Navy, and Amazon. Generally, $25 is a suggested donation, but any amount is welcome!  Donations may be brought to the Tyee front desk during school hours. Families are encouraged to send the gift card to school with your student to turn into the office during their lunch. Grocery store gift cards are always welcome, but Bellevue LifeSpring, (a community partner of BSD), will be donating Safeway food vouchers for the Winter Break.  Thus, the gift cards to the above stores would be a helpful option for our families.

Tyee: Lost & Found! Student lost and found items at Tyee Middle School – Just a friendly note that students have items that have been found at the school.  They are available for students to pick-up at the lost and found table, during school hours.  The items are located on a table, inside of the front entrance lobby area,  right side; by the stairwell.  Please have your child check the lost and found by 12/18/23.  After that, the remaining items will be donated.  Thank You!
Tyee: Gifts for Staff Every year when the holidays approach, we see grateful and thoughtful parents and community members who want to find ways to express their appreciation to our teachers and other employees for their work by giving gifts.   While Board Policy 5255 does not prohibit all gifts, gifts should still be of a nominal value.  Often parents are not aware that such gifts to publicly-paid employees are not permitted.   In the past we have advised that gifts be no more than $25 of value. Although heartfelt, gifts of significant monetary value or cash place the employee in a position of conflict of interest and may be in violation of our Conflicts of Interest Policy 5251 and will be graciously declined or returned.
BSD: Middle School Consolidation Study Update Like many other districts across the region, the Bellevue School District is experiencing an enrollment decline that demographers expect to continue for the next several years. Because the state funds education through a per-pupil allocation, declining enrollment is resulting in budget shortfalls. Both the enrollment decline, and the financial impacts were identified last school year when the district responded by making budget cuts including the consolidation of two elementary schools. This year, the district is studying middle school enrollment with the possibility of consolidating a middle school along with other options to balance our budget.

To gather input from the community, forums were held at each of the five comprehensive middle schools. There were also six online forums, including in Spanish, Mandarin and Korean. A districtwide survey was conducted, and each middle school’s staff met to provide feedback. Additional outreach is ongoing as the district seeks to ensure that all voices are heard, and that those furthest from educational justice are well represented in the feedback.

Approximately 750 participants attended the community forums and approximately 1,300 individuals completed the survey. Summaries from each community forum as well as the complete meeting notes have been posted to the Middle School Consolidation Study Community Feedback webpage. A districtwide summary is also available. In addition, questions and answers to questions asked at the community forums have been added to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) webpage.

A district team is in the process of analyzing the feedback it has received — and continues to receive — from the community and delving into the demographic projections and budget scenarios. All options are being explored to solve for the long-term, make equitable decisions, and minimize negative impacts on students and their families.

There are no easy choices — these are by far some of the hardest decisions any district must make. The district heard from community members that we need to continue to provide a sense of belonging in our schools and excellent and equitable educational opportunities for all. We are fully committed to our vision to affirm and inspire each and every student to learn and thrive as creators of their future world.

A draft recommendation that will be shared with the community in January and deep community engagement will continue in February, seeking feedback on the recommendation. See the Middle School Consolidation Study Timeline to learn more.

BSD: Mental Health Resources for the Community Online Resources: The BSD website includes a Mental Health Services section, which provides mental health resources for students, staff and families. The BSD community is encouraged to explore these resources to learn more about mental health topics including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance abuse and suicide prevention. Individuals seeking support may also reach out to school counselors and MHAT counselors.

Care Solace: The Bellevue School District has partnered with Care Solace to complement districtwide efforts that support the well-being of students, families and staff. Care Solace is a free and confidential care coordination service that can help you quickly find mental health or substance use treatment options matched to your needs, regardless of circumstance. Care Solace is NOT an emergency response service or mental health service provider. If you have a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 or The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.

The Care Solace team is always available — including nights, weekends and holidays. Although school will not be in session over Winter Break, we encourage you to save these resources to easily reference them should you or a family member need help during the break or beyond. If you or a family member need mental health or substance use supports and would like to use Care Solace to find a provider:

  • Call or text 888-515-0595. Multilingual support is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
  • Visit www.caresolace.com/bsd405 and search anonymously on your own OR click “Book Appointment” for assistance by video chat, email or phone.
Tyee: Pre-Arranged Absences Bellevue School District gives all students 5 pre-arranged absence days per school year.  These are excused and can be used for family events, travel, extracurricular events,  private school interviews, etc.  Please complete the pre-arranged absence form (linked below) prior to the absence for it to be excused.  Students must get their teacher and parents signatures.  After they get all teacher signatures, your student will need to turn the completed form in, to the attendance office.   This form should be submitted to the attendance office at least 3 days before the planned absence so we have time to process it.  You can find more information about pre-arranged absences on this page:  https://bsd405.org/tyee/report-an-absence/
Tyee: Arrival & Dismissal Reminders As the days become darker, and a new activity season begins, we wanted to share a few reminders for our families driving to school!

Arrival: Tyee is open at 8:00am every morning. We strongly encourage families driving to drop students off before 8:15am. Our families dropping students off between 7:55 and 8:05 face very little traffic! Earlier arrivals lessen traffic jams, and better ensure our buses to get in. Our building is open for students to eat breakfast, catch up on homework, and visit the library!

Dismissal: Students participating in after school clubs & activities must be picked up by 4:50pm. The Activity Bus will continue running through the year. It is very dark, so it is important families ensure students are picked up right after activities.

Tyee: Inclement Weather and Potential Closure Reminders Winter is approaching and may bring unpredictable weather. If there are severe conditions, BSD will communicate any schedule changes or closures through direct messages, including email, text message, phone call, social media, FlashAlert, local media and posts to www.bsd405.org. While these decisions are made for the district at large, conditions may vary in certain neighborhoods. We encourage families to make personal decisions based on their specific circumstances.

Tyee: Nurse News

Feeling Sick? We strongly recommend you and your student to stay home if you are having cold-like symptoms. Please visit: https://bsd405.org/services/health/too-sick-for-school/. Giving a fever reducing medication just before returning to school does not make a student well. It may only mask the fever until the medication wears off. In this situation, a student needs to be home so others are not exposed to illness. Fever reducing medications include: Acetaminophen (Tylenol); Ibuprofen; Aspirin; Naproxen; Dayquil; Nyquil

Going Home Early? Students are to notify the office/clinic when checking out. If your student calls home directly to request you pick them up, please remind them to go to the clinic or office.
