Renovation & Addition Opportunities

There are exciting opportunities when we consider renovation/addition work differently from new construction.

Embodied Carbon Reduction Strategies

  • Re-use 57,000 sf of existing building
  • Re-use existing covered play structure
  • Re-use wood door panels
  • Re-use existing cabinets
The carbon saved by reusing the existing school is ~2000 metric Tons.

This is equivalent to:

  • 2,385 acres of US forest in sequestering CO2 for one year
  • 445 gas cars emitting CO2 for one year

Operational Carbon Reduction Strategies

  • Rooftop PV panels
  • 212 kW = 210,620 kWh/year
  • Enhanced building envelope (for new construction areas)
  • Efficient mechanical systems

Anticipated Start of Construction- Spring 2025

Anticipated Occupancy- Fall 2026

In January 2022, Mahlum began to develop the Educational Specifications with stakeholders from Bellevue School District and the Big Picture School. The purpose of the Educational Specifications is to define the programmatic, functional, spatial, and environmental requirements for the Big Picture School. The design process was paused during the conversation about elementary school consolidation last year and then resumed last Spring after it was determined that Bellevue Big Picture School would relocate to the Eastgate location.

An important part of the process is engagement with the diverse public partners that have input on the development of the project. City agencies review our development and define parameters. For example, this process allows the district to change the school occupancy from an elementary to a high school in a residential zone.

Updates

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
