Tillicum Times

September 25, 2023

Dear Tillicum Families,

As middle school educators (and parents) we labor to impart to our students “executive functioning skills”.  These skills underlie the capacity to plan ahead and meet goals, display self-control, follow multiple-step directions even when interrupted, and stay focused despite distractions.  Students with strong executive functioning skills will find greater academic success and school/life enjoyment.  Toward this end, all Tillicum educators committed this August to collectively emphasizing the skill of organization through the schoolwide use of Academic Planners.  Every Tillicum student received one of these spiral organizers in the first week of school.  During each class period, teachers make time to identify what students are learning in class and what, if any, homework is being assigned.  For their part, students should be recording what they did in class and any associated homework assignment.

As parents, I hope that you have seen these planners in your students hands.  I encourage you to sit down with your child and ask them what they are learning in their classes and to show you any of the assignments they are working on.  As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher via email.  Working together as a school and with families, our students will find great success and enjoyment at school this year.
