Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to read our Phoenix Family Flyer each month.

With the end of the year fast approaching, our teachers work very hard to build relationships and support our students not only academically and also socially emotionally. As we shared on Curriculum Night, social-emotional learning/skills are critical to students’ school life and beyond school. Please take a moment to send your child’s teacher a thank you note for their hard work and dedication.

Please know that I am also a parent, we would love for you to get in touch if you need any feedback and assistance. Talking to people outside the family can help because they also understand what your child is going through. We are here for you, please feel free to email or call. This is my work cell phone number (425) 465-6062. If you want to chat with me, just call or text.

Last but not least, we would like to thank you for being a part of the beautiful community in many forms. Thank you for everything you have done as a collaborator and for your great efforts for Jing Mei. We are grateful and lucky to have you in our community! Happy Thanksgiving to you!

With Gratitude,

Mr. Shelton and Ms. Tan

November/December Safety Drills

In November we conducted a lockdown drill and practiced what we would do if there was an unknown intruder in the building. Students learned about the importance of listening to school staff and following instructions quickly and quietly. We also practiced assessing our environment and making decisions to keep us safe.

Please remember that a lockdown is considered a preventative measure and is not the same as an Active Threat.

Please talk to your child about our drill today. Be sure to listen and let them lead the conversation. An important next step in your family preparedness might be to talk about how what your child learned in the drill can help them stay safe in other situations.

For more information on talking to your child about school safety, you might want to visit the website https://www.mhanational.org/talking-kids-about-school-safety.

In December we will conduct a shelter-in-place drill. A scenario where a shelter-in-place would be necessary is:

Chlorine Release On Nearby Road

A tanker truck traveling on a nearby road has overturned, releasing chlorine gas. Police have called and said you have about 10 minutes to prepare your Shelter-in-place areas.

During a shelter-in-place drill, students sit quietly while staff simulate sealing the room to limit outside air exchange.

Shelter-in-place procedures would only be used if officials determine there is not enough time to safely evacuate people out of the danger zone.

Please talk with your student about preparing for emergencies and disasters. Encourage them to talk about their concerns and express their feelings. Emphasize that even though sometimes things happen that we may not expect, there are lots of things we can do to help us stay safe.

For more information on shelter-in-place, you might want to visit the Washington Department of Health website at https://www.doh.wa.gov/Emergencies/BePreparedBeSafe/SevereWeatherandNaturalDisasters/ShelterInPlace or the Washington Emergency Management Division at https://mil.wa.gov/hazardous-material.

Student and Community Engagement Sessions for Proposed CEO Program

Upcoming dates and times for student and community feedback sessions are now available regarding the proposed Community Engagement Officer Program, which replaces the former School Resource Officer Program.

Student and Community Engagement Sessions for Proposed CEO Program

The Bellevue School District (BSD), in partnership with the Bellevue Police Department (BPD), is reforming its School Resource Officer Program to address laws passed by the Washington State Legislature and to respond to a need for shared values and purpose, as expressed by our learning community. The proposed new program, the Community Engagement Officer (CEO) Program, is a community-based response to the need to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for our students. The partnership between BSD and BPD reaffirms the agreed commitment to build relationships with youth, staff members, and the community to reinforce collaborative problem solving and promote a safe and inclusive learning community.

Students are invited to attend a session at their school to hear about the planned changes and to offer input into the proposed CEO program. Representatives from both the Bellevue School District and the Bellevue Police Department will be present. Students can use this online form to submit a question, concern or idea prior to the event at their school.

In-person sessions will take place at each comprehensive BSD high school on the following dates:

Interlake High School – November 28, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Bellevue High School  December 7, 1:30-2:30 p.m.

Families are invited to attend a community engagement event to share their feedback and help inform the implementation of the program.

In-person sessions will take place on the following dates:

Highland Middle School  Tuesday, November 29, 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Social Engineering: What it is, why it’s so dangerous, how do I spot it, and what do I do if I receive it?

In October, the Technology Services Department launched a new Cybersecurity Awareness Program. As part of their continuing education around digital safety, this month they are sharing news about social engineering. Bad actors can use social engineering techniques to trick users into doing harmful things.

Rainier Athletes Seeking Adult Volunteer Mentors

For the past ten years, Rainier Athletes has been a partner of the Bellevue School District. The mission of the organization has remained steadfast: use athletics and mentorship to direct students towards a path of achievement and close opportunity gaps.

A student participant in Rainier Athletes is paired with a dedicated mentor and fully sponsored year-round to participate in sports, extracurriculars and summer camps. Mentors build relationships with the student and foster an authentic connection with the student’s family and community to holistically support and motivate students to achieve their greatest potential.

Rainier Athletes is in search of caring adults to be connectors that bring together a community of support for students in our district. Learn how you can apply to volunteer as Rainier Athlete’s mentor.

Cold Weather Resources and Holiday Supports

As the cold weather sets in, please be aware of resources made available by the King County Regional Housing Authority KCRHA. Anyone experiencing homelessness or needing housing support can reach out to any of these cold weather shelter resources.

Student Device Monitoring for Families

https://bsd405.org/departments/district-technology/technology-safety/student-online-behavior/

To provide families with awareness of their student’s laptop activity, the district has implemented apParent Online the parent app companion to AssistX Education’s Class Policy teacher application.

This software allows families access to the following features during non-school hours:

  1. View screen images of your student’s district-issued laptop
  2. Remotely lock and unlock your student’s device
  3. View the past 24 hours of your student’s online browsing history
  4. Schedule screen lock with auto release
  5. Schedule screen recording with time lapse playback

While we are in temporary remote/hybrid learning, parents have access to the below monitoring features during school hours. Restriction features during school hours are accessible only to teachers to ensure students will not be blocked from resources needed for classwork.

  1. View screen images of your student’s district-issued laptop
  2. View the past 24 hours of your student’s online browsing history

To get started:

  1. You should have received an invitation from the district. If not, please contact us at [email protected]
  2. Install apParent Online for Android or apParent Online for iOS (iPhone/iPad)
  3. Login to the parent app with the login info from the opt-in email to begin managing and monitoring your student’s laptop

Important notes:

  • School hours are specific to each school’s schedule and you will see that reflected for your student in the apParent app
  • This application is not enabled for district-issued iPads

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
