While college applications are widely regarded as a senior-year task, planning and research for this process should begin in 9th grade.

Students and families need to make many complex decisions if the college your student selects will match their personal and professional needs.

Students should be thinking about some of these decisions (not a complete list):

  • What sort of climate can I be comfortable with?
  • What majors interest me?
  • What resources does my family have to help me and where else can I get help?
  • Am I the first in my family to attend college? Get started with the extra guidance you will need to be successful. See your counselor and our College & Career Center in the Newport library.
  • Would I thrive in a large college with large classes, or would a smaller institution suit me better?
