May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. Kalpana Chawla was an Indian American astronaut and engineer, and the first woman of Indian descent to go to space. She served as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator on Space Shuttle Columbia. Sadly, Chawla was one of the seven crew members who died when the spacecraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere in 2003. Chawla was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor, the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the NASA Space Flight Medal. Several streets, universities and institutions have been named in her honor.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
