March 19, 2024 – NHE Community Newsletter

Message from the Admin Team

It was great to see all the evidence of student engagement this week at NHE! Spirit Week meant that many of our students were dressed to represent the day (sports, class theme, etc.). We heard their voices on the announcements to help create that sense of community, we saw them comparing fun outfits, and sharing the NHE spirit with one another.

There was also a student council meeting with an amazing number of students joining each other at 7:15 one morning in the library with our teacher leaders (thank you Ms. Hallock and Ms. Asmann). We know that student voice and agency is critical in fostering a culture of well-being and belonging. We want to promote this in as many ways as possible at NHE. As students talked about Spirit Week and upcoming school events and ideas, some students felt comfortable to talk out loud in front of the whole group but to also support our quieter students’ participation, students also discussed their thoughts as a table. They reflected quietly at times, and they took notes on paper provided for their thinking. There were so many examples of students being authentically engaged in the conversation.

This week our teachers also were engaged in learning more as a staff during a professional development afternoon about the Lego SPIKE kits. Teachers worked within groups to put together different Lego projects and they used coding to help these projects have movement (e.g., building a Lego see saw that goes up and down). They had to problem solve, communicate, collaborate (and of course, have fun!) just as we ask our students to do each day.

Dr. Macias and I feel privileged to be a part of this learning community and we look forward to sharing examples of this each week!

Korean Bilingual Program

We are thrilled to announce the introduction of a new Korean bilingual program at Newport Heights Elementary School, starting in the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. This program aims to provide our students with a rich and immersive learning experience in both English and Korean languages.

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, proficiency in multiple languages is an invaluable skill. The Korean bilingual program will not only enhance our students’ language abilities but also foster cultural understanding and appreciation.

Through engaging curriculum, and interactive activities, students enrolled in the Korean bilingual program will have the opportunity to develop learn in both English and Korean while exploring Korean culture, history, and traditions.

We are excited to offer this new educational opportunity to our students and look forward to seeing the growth and success that comes from embracing linguistic and cultural diversity.

Important Information

  • Please be mindful that parking spots marked for the disabled are only to be used by those who have handicap parking permits. We have many NHE students whose families rely on those spots and when those spots are taken by cars without a permit it makes dropping off/picking up a true hardship for those members of our community.
  • Breakfast is available to NHE students every morning, starting at 7:40am. We currently have an average of 30 students each morning, but in order to continue this important program at NHE we need to average 42 students. Please take advantage of breakfast at NHE!

If you are interested in sharing with our community a little about your cultural background, please fill out this form located in the PTA section below.
