We have been busy here at Stevenson now that we are well into October.  We celebrated Unity Day this week through lessons in the library.  We celebrated kindness, unity, and compassion across our school this week and it was wonderful to see our Superstars showing unity all week long!

We also have Superstar Wednesday coming up this week and next week.  The details and times of the event are listed below.  We love Superstar Wednesday because it gives us a chance to open our classrooms to our families and you get to see your child learning in their classroom space with their peers and teachers.  For our upcoming Superstar Wednesdays, you will see either a math lesson and play math games with your child or participate in a literacy lesson.  We hope each family can come to join us this week or next week for Superstar Wednesday.  Check the information below to see which week your child’s grade-level is meeting.

Also, you will see our staff out front on Monday morning for Coffee at the curb.  We will greet everyone with coffee, tea and a smile to start the week. We are so excited to see our families at school over the next two weeks and continue to enjoy this fall weather and your amazing children.  Have hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Hemos estado ocupados aquí en Stevenson ahora que estamos en octubre.  Celebramos el Día de la Unidad esta semana a través de lecciones en la biblioteca.  ¡Celebramos la bondad, la unidad y la compasión en toda nuestra escuela esta semana y fue maravilloso ver a nuestras Superestrellas mostrando unidad durante toda la semana!

También tenemos el Miércoles de Superestrellas esta semana y la próxima.  Los detalles y horarios del evento se enumeran a continuación.  Nos encanta el Miércoles de Superestrellas porque nos da la oportunidad de abrir nuestras aulas a nuestras familias y puedes ver a tu hijo aprendiendo en el espacio de su salón de clases con sus compañeros y maestros.  Para nuestros próximos Miércoles de superestrellas, ofreceremos lecciones de matemáticas y podrás disfrutar de juegos matemáticos y aprendizaje de matemáticas con tu estudiante. Esperamos que cada familia pueda venir a unirse a nosotros esta semana o la próxima para el Miércoles de Superestrellas.  Revise la información a continuación para ver en qué semana se está reuniendo el nivel de grado de su hijo.

Además, verá a nuestro personal al frente el lunes por la mañana para tomar un café en la acera.  Saludaremos a todos con café, té y una sonrisa para comenzar la semana. Estamos muy emocionados de ver a nuestras familias en la escuela durante las próximas dos semanas y continuar disfrutando de este clima otoñal y de sus increíbles hijos.  Tengan la esperanza de que todos tengan un maravilloso fin de semana.

Wednesday, November 1st:  Stevenson staff welcome families for Preschool (full-day only), Kindergarten, 2nd grade, 4th grade.  You are invited to the Cultural Center from 8:00-8:15 for coffee and tea and will join your child in their classroom from 8:15-8:45 to participate in a lesson alongside your child.  Most grades will be engaging in a math lesson.

Inclusion in Action:  8:50-10:00:  This five-part learning series is geared for parents of our students with special education to connect with one another, learn about a common diagnosis like autism and explore resources within and outside our school community.   This portion of the event will be shared directly with families.

We are proud to be a Spanish Dual Language School at Stevenson. We will be hosting a school-wide event to honor and celebrate National Latinx/Hispanic Heritage. Join us on Thursday, November 2nd from 5:30pm -7:30pm. There will be food, a folkloric dance performance, singers from Chile, and lots of fun activities for all. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the PTA to raise funds for current and future events. We are looking forward to celebrating this important event together.

Students must be accompanied by an adult.

Estamos orgullosos de ser una escuela dual de español y inglés en Stevenson. Organizaremos un evento en la escuela para honrar y celebrar la Herencia Nacional Latinx/Hispana. My name is Laura Kent, and I am a graduate student in the University of Washington’s Master of Social Work program. This school year I am interning in the Family Connections Center working with Liliana Godinez on Wrap Around Services. Some fun facts about me: While I grew up in California, I’ve been in Washington since 2020. I have 5 cats and 2 dogs (an absurd number of pets, I know) and I enjoy watching bad reality tv.

I am in the Family Connections Center Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays 7:30am-11:30am so please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself. I look forward to meeting all of you and to a great year at Stevenson!

Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday that celebrates the lives of loved ones who have passed away. During this day, families, and communities build “ofrendas” altars that often include favorite food, skulls, souvenirs, photos, etc. of deceased loved ones.

During the Day of the Dead, it is believed that the passage between the spirit world and the world of the living is open so that deceased loved ones can return to visit the living. The Day of the Dead is not a sad day, it is a celebration of loved ones from the past and the memories they have left in our lives. This deceased loved one could be a family member, a pet, an icon from history, a famous artist, etc. who had an impact on your family or your child’s life (for example, a famous athlete, a social justice advocate, a teacher, a community leader, etc.).

Stevenson will celebrate Día de los Muertos from Monday, October 30 to Friday, November 3. Stevenson will display an “ofrenda” (traditional altar) at the Stevenson Cultural Center for students of all cultures to honor their loved ones who have passed away. This year, students are encouraged to participate in creating our community offering by bringing the included candle to school. You can also share photos of your deceased loved ones (not originals, please), a poem, a drawing or some reflections on what your family learned from this person.

To get your child involved, have them write something they or their family learned or valued about this loved one on the candle provided. Your child can also draw something or stick a photo on this candle. Both sides can be used. Please return the candle to school with your child by Wednesday, November 1 so it can be added to our school offering. Thank you for celebrating the Day of the Dead with us!

El Día de los Muertos es una fiesta tradicional mexicana y latinoamericana que celebra la vida de los seres queridos que han fallecido. Durante este día, las familias y las comunidades construyen altares “ofrendas” que a menudo incluyen la comida favorita, “calaveritas”, recuerdos, fotos, etc. de los seres queridos fallecidos.

Durante el Día de los Muertos, se cree que el pasaje entre el mundo de los espíritus y el mundo de los vivos está abierto para que los seres queridos fallecidos puedan regresar a visitar a los vivos. El Día de los Muertos no es un día triste, es una celebración de los seres queridos del pasado y de los recuerdos que han dejado en nuestras vidas. Este ser querido ya fallecido puede ser un miembro de la familia, una mascota, algún icono de la historia, un artista famoso, etc. que tuvo un impacto en su familia o en la vida de su hijo (por ejemplo, un atleta famoso, un defensor de la justicia social, un maestro, un líder comunitario, etc.).

Stevenson celebrará el Día de los Muertos desde el lunes 30 de octubre hasta el viernes 3 de noviembre. Stevenson exhibirá una “ofrenda” (altar tradicional) en el Centro Cultural Stevenson para estudiantes de todas las culturas con el fin de honrar a sus seres queridos que han fallecido. Este año, se motiva a los estudiantes a participar en la creación de la ofrenda de nuestra comunidad trayendo a la escuela la vela incluida, también puede compartir fotos de sus seres queridos ya fallecidos, (no originales, por favor), un poema, un dibujo o algunas reflexiones sobre lo que su familia aprendió de esta persona.

Para que su hijo participe, pídale que escriba algo que él o su familia hayan aprendido o valorado sobre este ser querido en la vela provista. Su hijo también puede dibujar algo o pegar una foto en esta vela. Se pueden utilizar ambos lados. However, social media can distract our students, disrupt their sleep, expose them to unrealistic beauty standards, bullying, and rumor-spreading. The more we educate ourselves on warning signs and how to monitor students, the better we can help prevent them from these adverse effects.

There are healthy ways to find a balance with social media and mitigate the related risks. Here are a few tips on how to protect students:

• Set boundaries. Ensure your student has a phone use routine, so their phone does not interfere with their sleep, homework, or other responsibilities.
• Have open discussions. Ask your child why they are using social media and ask if they understand its risks. Ask them how social media makes them feel and have a plan if they start to have negative emotions associated with their use.
• Teach social media etiquette. Discuss appropriate behavior on social media. Ensure they carry their core morals on how to treat others as they interact with others virtually.
• Set social media rules. For example, making their account private, not allowing them to accept friend requests from strangers, and having restrictions on what type of content they are allowed to post, consume, and share.
