One of the essential components of the 6th grade year at International School—along with all other BSD schools—is the opportunity for students to engage with 6th Grade Science Camp. We have missed having this experience for our students that past several years and are excited to be able to bring it back.

At International School, we have built this into the Focus Week activity for 6th graders so that it does not conflict with missing other classes during the year. From Tuesday, May 23 through Friday, May 26, students will be travelling to YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas Island as a sixth grade team.  We will spend four days and three nights at camp, where students will attend science classes both outdoors and in Camp Orkila’s beautiful Marine Science Center. Students will have an opportunity to work together to build community and develop deeper relationships with each other and our staff.

For those unable to attend the Information Night for 6th Grade Camp, here is a communication from our staff along with resources:

Hello 6th Grade Families!

It was so nice to see many of you at the 6th Grade Science Camp family info session last Thursday. We are so excited to be going to YMCA Camp Orkila with our 6th graders for Focus Week. As a reminder, students will attend school as normal on Monday, May 22nd. On Tuesday, May 23rd we ask students to arrive no later than 7:30am. We will return between 3-4pm on Friday, May 26th.

To follow up, and for those of you who were unable to attend the info session, here are the documents I mentioned:

  1. OEE Master Presentation – This is the presentation given by Haley Cruz Winchell, director of Outdoor Education at YMCA Camp Orkila. (Note that even though the sample schedule says Elementary, it is the schedule our students follow too)
  2. 3416P Exhibit A – This is the document that needs to be completed by you and your student’s healthcare provider if you will be sending any type of medication, including over-the-counter medication like Tylenol, Advil, Claritin, or Zyrtec. Your provider can fax the completed form directly to our office at 425-456-6565, or you can drop it off in the main office for our nurse Soleil Vo ([email protected]).  Please submit this form by May 5th if possible to allow us time to organize the information, but you do not need to provide the medication itself until the morning of departure.
  3. Packing List – students will bring their packed bag/sleeping bag/pillow to school on Monday, May 22nd; luggage will be packed onto a luggage truck and leave International School on Tuesday morning before students arrive. Last minute/day-of items such as toiletries may be carried in their day pack/backpack on Tuesday May 23rd.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns!

Regards,

Abigail Horsfall

Cost of Camp

The cost of 6th grade camp is $325. This has already been added as a fee to the account for all 6th graders and families can pay for it online. For families who have applied for “fee waivers” with the district, this would be taken care of through that process. Please feel free to reach out to your student’s counselor (Arty Christianto) if you need additional assistance.

If there is a reason why your student is unable to attend camp this year, please contact Arty Christianto.
