Limited Childcare to Be Offered This Fall

Recognizing that some families are unable to stay home during our full remote learning start this fall, the Bellevue School District will be offering limited childcare service. Spots will be prioritized for children of essential workers. Examples include healthcare workers, first responders and educators. Families will be informed of acceptance within the week that they apply. We recognize that these limited services may not meet all the needs of our families.

Why is the district able to offer childcare and not open school buildings to students?

As an essential service, childcare centers in Washington remained open through Gov. Inslee’s Stay Home Stay Healthy orders. The science around children and COVID-19 indicate young children are less likely to become as sick as adults and older children. Opening schools more broadly to all students carries a very significant risk of widespread transmission of the virus to students, educators, staff, and the general public.  Providing this essential service in a safe manner for less than 1,000 children is much simpler than providing services for the over 13,000 students whose families indicated the wish for some type of in-person learning.

Our childcare centers follow public health and safety guidance, which includes symptom monitoring, distancing, increased hand hygiene (washing and providing sanitizing stations), more extensive cleaning, and ventilation. In addition, staff and children are required to wear face coverings.

What childcare services are being offered?

Space will be limited to 600 spots kindergarten through 5th grade students at three locations – Eastgate, Phantom Lake, and Stevenson Elementary Schools.

Care will be provided from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the week beginning the first day of school on September 3, 2020. Meal service will be available and remote learning support will be provided. The cost will be $1280 per month, with scholarships available for qualifying families.Tuition supports district childcare services, which do not receive state or private funding for the cost of operations and staffing. The additional safety measures and lower staffing ratios do not allow for flexibility in the costs of the program at this time.

King County Health Department guidelines will be followed, and masks or face coverings will be required for all students and staff.

Preschool Students

The care and experiences that children receive during their early years have a powerful influence on how they view the world and relate to others. Throughout the day, our programs actively engage children in experiences to develop their physical, social, cognitive and language skills.

The preschool years are a special time in a child’s life. During these years, children become more independent, begin to develop self-control and learn to assert themselves in socially accepted ways. They also begin to use thousands of words and complex sentences to express their ideas. The district’s preschool curriculum provides opportunities for your child to practice these skills and more. Our goal is to prepare your child to be successful Kindergartner in the Bellevue Schools.

We work closely with families so that your child’s experience will be positive and successful. We look forward to partnering with you as your child begins their journey with the Bellevue School District.
