Advanced Placement Dual Credit Options (AP)

Advanced Placement courses give students the chance to tackle college-level work while they’re still in high school. The College Board authorizes Advanced Placement courses and the high school teachers at BSD high schools who teach them through the AP Audit process. In May of each year, students may take AP exams ordered from the College Board and administered at the high school. Completed exams are sent back to the College Board for scoring. Depending on the exam score, students may earn college credit. Colleges determine the type and amount of credit earned based on the exam and the exam score. This website allows you to search for colleges and find out which courses/scores receive credit or advanced placement in a subject area.

Students stay enrolled in their high school; take the courses with their high school teachers; and elect to take the exam in May of each year at a cost determined by the College Board ($98 for May, 2024 exams). Bellevue School District will support families who are experiencing financial hardship by reducing fees for AP Tests with the aim that no student is denied access to AP exams due to financial difficulties.

Is This Program the Right Dual Credit Option for You?

  • Where are your academic strengths? This program is for students who want to challenge themselves to the rigor of college-level course work. To earn college credit students must sit for a lengthy comprehensive exam administered in May and earn a score of 3 or better (on a 5 point scale).
  • How will these credits transfer to higher education institutions? Credit or advanced placement in college depends on the student’s score on the AP exam and is determined by each college. This website allows you to search for colleges and find out which courses/scores receive credit or advanced placement in a subject area.
  • Is it important that all credits and grades appear on a college transcript? AP exam scores are not included on a transcript. It is up to the student to send the AP Score Report to a college once they have been admitted for determination of college credits or advanced placement.
  • Is location important? Students take AP classes at their own high school.
  • Cost: $98 per exam for 2023-24. A $40 late fee is levied by the College Board if exams are not ordered before November 15.

How are Credits Earned?

  • High School Credits: AP courses earn 1.0 high school credit for the year-long course.
  • College Credits: College credit is dependent on the student’s score on the AP exam taken in May. Exams are scored on a 5 point scale. Each college determines which college courses will be awarded credit and the score required. This website allows you to search for colleges and find out which courses/scores receive credit or advanced placement in a subject area.

How Much Does This Cost?

$98 per exam in 2023-24.
