We Are Bellevue with 9th Grade Student, Mehr Grewal
I’m Mehr Grewal and I am a rising 9th grade student at Interlake High School and I just wanted to say to Doctor Jarvis, thank you so much for your leadership especially at such a challenging time like this when the pandemic is changing the way we go to school, receive education and do sports. So we at BSD are very honored to have you lead us. So just some of my thoughts about the upcoming school year; I think that there will be many, many firsts this fall, and the first thing that comes to mind is excitement for new start for high school in person learning meeting my friends, meeting new people and I’m really excited to see my new school, meet my teachers….just really excited to be [a high school]. [Or finally] and there’s also the fact that masks are accompanying us to school. So is social distancing, and there’s that nervousness about how restrictive this will be for our learning.
So, one question that I have….and I know that many students and families are also wondering about, is that schools are opening in two weeks and like me, almost everyone I think is excited for in person learning. So, what have Bellevue schools been doing to make it a safe learning environment for kids in terms of ventilation in our buildings? In terms of [doing] classes outside [in terms] of will students be allowed to eat lunch outside the building? I know that public health has been talking about HEPA filters….keeping windows open in classrooms and outside learning. So, is that something that BSD is looking into?
And I also wanted to share that I lead an effort called Worth A Shot where we have been working closely with King County Public Health to help raise awareness about COVID vaccines and immunize our country and state. So, we have helped thousands of people receive their vaccines.
And we know that so many people have questions and concerns about this upcoming school year. So, we’re working with the city of Bellevue and Bellevue Youth link to organize. A vaccine webinar on Friday, August 27th from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, so feel free to join. You will have the opportunity to ask your questions to our physicians. We have an infectious disease expert coming in an allergist and immunologist, so this is a great opportunity to ask questions about the start of school. About COVID vaccines for kids.

Soy Mehr Grewal y soy un estudiante entrando a 9º grado en Interlake High School y solo quería decirle al doctor Jarvis, muchas gracias por su liderazgo, especialmente en un momento tan desafiante como este cuando la pandemia está cambiando la forma en que nosotros vamos a la escuela, recibimos educación y hacemos deporte. Por eso, en BSD nos sentimos muy honrados de que nos lidere. He aquí algunos de mis pensamientos sobre el próximo año escolar; creo que habrá muchas, muchas novedades este otoño, y lo primero que me viene a la mente es la emoción por el nuevo comienzo de la preparatoria/bachillerato, el aprendizaje en persona, encontrarme a mis amigos, conocer gente nueva y estoy muy emocionado de ver mi nueva escuela, conocer a mis maestros … estoy muy emocionado de estar [una preparatoria/bachillerato]. [O por fin] y también está el hecho de que las mascarillas nos acompañan a la escuela. También lo es el distanciamiento social, y existe ese nerviosismo sobre cuán restrictivo será para nuestro aprendizaje.
Entonces, una pregunta que tengo … y sé que muchos estudiantes y familias también se están preguntando, es que las escuelas abrirán en dos semanas y, como yo, creo que casi todos están emocionados por el aprendizaje en persona. Entonces, ¿qué han estado haciendo las escuelas de Bellevue para que sea un entorno de aprendizaje seguro para los niños en términos de ventilación en nuestros edificios?
