Highlights

Director of Facilities & Operations Jack McLeod presented construction recommendations. The board approved the following:

  • Stevenson Elementary Change Order No. 4 in the additive amount of $308,728 (plus tax).
  • WISC Sidewalk Easement Agreement request from the City of Bellevue for the walkway, utility and landscape improvements along the WISC site frontage, 12441 Main Street. This will allow the city to rebuild and maintain the paved path, install conduit underground to support the school zone flashing beacons and speed radar feedback signs, and improve and maintain landscaping between the path and the roadway.
  • Tyee Middle School Sewer Easement Agreement with a Bellevue resident to make a sanitary sewer connection to the City of Bellevue sewer system located on the northwest portion of the Tyee Middle School lower track and field.
  • Award of contract for the Newport High School Science Room and Plaza Renovation project to Reynolds General Contracting, Inc. in the amount of $580,486.25. This project includes remodeling science classrooms to allow for the addition of more chemistry classes, and the addition of outdoor seating for lunch periods and gatherings.

Budget Analyst Ryon Fields introduced student government speakers who presented ASB budget reports. The Newport High School 2018-19 ASB student governing body presented a report on the ASB budget, club activities, and goals for the year. The Tillicum Middle School ASB Advisor Kristi Bieler, ASB Accountant Julie Truong and current 8th graders presented a report on their activities and budget.

Executive Director of Schools Cindy Rogan introduced Spiritridge Elementary Principal Scott Hetherington and Assistant Principal Susan Webster who presented a school review. The board acknowledged the school team’s work recognizing and addressing specific social and emotional needs of students in the Gifted (GESP) Program and significant achievements in reading at the school.

Executive Director of Schools Patty Siegwarth and Athletics & Activities Director Jeff Lowell presented a High School Start Time Letter for further review with a report on feedback from students and families. Siegwarth and Lowell recommended that the board approve a new 8:00 a.m. start time with tutorial at the end of the school day for Bellevue, Newport, Interlake, and Sammamish high schools. The board approved the new schedule for 2018-19.

The board conducted a first reading of the following policies:

  • New Policy 3205: Prohibition of Sexual Harassment – Students
  • Revised Policy 3207: Prohibition of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB)
  • Revised Procedure 3207P: Prohibition of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB)
  • Revised Policy 5011: Prohibition of Sexual Harassment – Staff

The board conducted a second reading of Policy 3120: Enrollment – Resident Students

Board Director My-Linh Thai led a discussion with the board about participation in the November 14-17, 2018 Washington State School Directors’ Association (WSSDA) Conference Breakout Proposals.

Board Director Christine Chew proposed that the board approve the suspension of a section of Policy 0150: Planning process to delay the development of the one-year Annual Plan to coincide with current three to five-year strategic planning work. The board agreed to review the plans at the August 7, 2018 board meeting.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
