District Administration magazine has named Bellevue School District a District of Distinction for its Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Initiative in its July 2017 issue.

The district earned this national distinction for leading the way with new ideas that work and yield quantifiable benefits. In fall 2011, to reach the “whole child”, Bellevue adopted a social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum by teaching self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. The district expanded the curriculum to ensure that graduates possessed interpersonal skills.

From 2015 to 2016, the percentage of students who had difficulty communicating and with building healthy relationships dropped from 13 to 10 percent. SEL improves student interaction and reduces instances of bullying.

The district’s SEL initiative is generously supported by the Bellevue Schools Foundation, a community based non-profit that has been supporting Bellevue students since 1979.

The Bellevue School District acknowledges that we learn, work, live and gather on the Indigenous Land of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Duwamish and Snoqualmie Tribes. We thank these caretakers of this land, who have lived and continue to live here, since time immemorial.
